This one is a duplicate post (shared from the lens sample image posting). I will have enough soon to share. Taken with M85mm f2.<br />

Don't regret, that was a great bokeh - what aperture was that, if I may ask!?

I expected even smaller aperture going by those perfect circles in the bokeh. Cheers and good luck

I think f/5.6 is the maximum (wide-open) aperture of the kit lens at 55 mm.

For some reason I am really conservative when it comes to taking shots wide open. It's usually f5.6 or f8 (and be there!) or wide open for "pure" bokeh shots so more subject-isolation shots is on my list of things to work on. Anyways, here are some bokeh shots:

Pentax K-r + DA 40mm f2.8 Limited @ ISO 400, f2.8, 1/30 sec

Pentax K-r + DA 40mm f2.8 Limited @ ISO 200, f2.8, 1/50 sec

Pentax K-r + FA 50mm f1.4 @ ISO 200, f1.4, 1/60 sec

Pentax K-r + FA 50mm f1.4 @ ISO 400, f1.8, 1/50 sec

I have a silly question: Isn't bokeh a word from the Japanese language that mean undefined, blurry, background? If yes, doesn't it need to be a foreground to be called bokeh? In this case, I think the background became the subject, therefore, there is no bokeh, but a out of focus object. Where am I wrong? OMG, I should have not been a philosophy major, I need to get my pills for the memory.

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe 暈け (boke) literally means "blur," "dull," or "fuzzy." However, I think this may have the more casual context such as "it was all a blur," "your charisma is so dull," or "my memory is a little fuzzy right now."

Apparently, the term "bokeh" with the 'h' was popularized in the U.S. by a Photo Techniques (PT) magazine article. According to Mike Johnston, author of the LL article, editor of TOP, and editor of the mentioned PT article, he simply added the "h" to help English speakers with the pronunciation because people were pronouncing "boke," the original romanization of the word, as if it rhymed with "joke" or "coke."

According to another article by Mike Johnston from TOP blog, "as a photographic term it (bokeh) simply refers to the blur of objects out of the depth of field. I've been told that photographic blur would most likely be referred to as "bokeh-aji," which literally means "taste of blur."

Clarification: When I said "popularized in America" I meant how the term became popular in the nation. I did not mean that the original western usage of the Japanese term started in the U.S.
