I use that method for all my zooms, but for some odd reason, this lens responds better when the SR is set (close) to the FL I'm going to use.

It's a very nice lens, very good sharpness & IQ is outstanding. Mine hasn't seen a lot of use (yet) because I don't use those FL's that often, and the lens has a min. focus distance of about 1 meter or so. But it's smallish (49mm filters) and light, and has a built-in hood, so it'll be a good lens for outdoors/portrait shots. I was lucky & found mine VERY inexpensively (part of an ME Super bundle). I would probably have more use for one like your 35-105, though. But if you can find a deal, definitely grab one
