A couple of experiments

In anticipation of xmas card season, I've been working on a couple shots.

Both were with my K-5ii. Both were shot using my model who has the ability to sit still and be patient.

The first one was with my DA 40mm Limited at 2.8.

The second one is with my Rokinon 85mm at f1.4.

Talking of the Helios...here's a recent photo I'd like to share.

I think its captured virtually everything that is possible to capture with a 44-2. Internal oily lens flare, external lens flare, swirls, soft edges, pastel and watery like bokeh, post processing excess etc. etc. Its a proud moment in my efforts to test Helios bokeh to destruction!! (edit...and I love this lens)
I LOVE IT!
I generally dislike busy and radial-like bokeh but that scene just really WORKS! Only thing I'd consider changing is cropping off the top bit with the distractingly bright white area.

This makes me think I should get out my old Helios 44-? and play with it more.

Thank you so much. I've just cropped as you suggested and it does indeed look better. Have fun with that Helios.

Below is a photo by the unusual ten-bladed Auto Takumar 55mm 2.2. Wasn't actually trying to get this bokeh effect from the inflatable lilo, but sort of glad it came out as it did...

Some lovely shots here recently! arsn.r3d, what a fantastic shot--framing, expression, bokeh (of course!). If I were nitpicky, I would want a little more of a dark background on the right side of the face to give it a little more definition. Only saying that because IMHO it would be worth the PP trouble on a great shot like this. Definitely a keeper in my book!

utak, I know nothing of the lens you describe, but that looks like a pretty strongly lit scene and the bokeh is smooth as heck despite that (obvious highlights aside). Anyway, I guess I'm saying I would have expected a lot of random highlights in a sunny poolside scene, but since they are limited to the pattern of the floaty raft, it looks attractive rather than busy. Part of me wonders if I would crop that square...but then you would lose some context. Interesting shot that made me think, thanks!

shiner, nice abstract there. I like the "expanding bokeh bubbles" effect going on! Care to share the setup of the scene? Staged, found?

Thanks! Actually, those are steel sling shot ammo, like small ball bearings. I arranged them on a large black mouse pad, and set up a tripod next to the desk. Just a bunch of florescent lights overhead, augmented by a LED flashlight with a paper cup over it to dampen the harsh light- and the super-narrow DOF provided by the #3 extension tube- tweaked in LR5. I was really just looking for something to do alone all night at my office...
