There have been whole chapters in books written on incorporating foreground out of focus areas.

I was back at the swimming hole yesterday so I might as well post the rest of the small wildflowers I found there.

There was a challenge on the forum once, where the images had to have the subject framed by both foreground and background OOF areas...

one of my favourites...

Those were my DA 18-135, and K-3 ( most are ƒ11, one is ƒ16, one is ƒ5.6, ISO 200, shutter speeds between 1/30 and 1/50) on a small light weight tripod, very close to minimum focussing distance, two second delay on the timer but still some motion blur do to an intermittent breeze. Pentax won't call a lens that can't do 1:2 a macro, but Sigma will call a 1:4 lens a macro. So, if the 18-135 were a Sigma lens it would probably have a Macro designation. The 16-85 will achieve even higher magnification. The sharpness of both of these lenses in the centre, and their ability to focus close to the subject is just another aspect of why they are ideal walk around lenses.
