There's a period of time when the immature cardinals resemble females, but their beaks are dark, not bright like beaks of adults of either gender. The one in your picture still has some blackish patches on his beak, though he's starting to get a some red adult feathers coming in all over his body.
Yes, some of them are just hideous beyond belief....really disgusting looking. The same can go for the females too. Most of the other birds here do not go through such a transition. It is amazing to see them a year or so after their early youth, unbelievable transformation!

One of the worst cases of "Cardinal Ugly" I have seen around here....

Fortunately they do get over it!

Regards!

To lift a quote out of context from undeclared poet laureate Ogden Nash: "When they're molting, they're pretty revolting."

I like the plump lady cardinal in the last image.

Time for a Rupert story from the Woods of Otis....

"Looky down there at that worthless lazy rodent, just taking up space and looking stupid."

"Who....me?....I'm enjoying life to the fullest, not wasting it flapping wings and fowling the air!"

"Did you notice his crummy bokeh.......and his breath stinks to high heaven too!"

That's all folks!

Regards!

Portrait Bokeh

An Ecuadorian beauty against a Fort Augustus bokeh, makes for dare... I say a fairly good combo.
