Telephoto lens and a background far behind the subject, bokeh doesn't get much better.

Agreed. Is that a Grosbeak? We have the Black-headed and Evening Grosbeak here but not that one. Um, IF it's one.

Rose-breasted grosbeak. The males in breeding plumage are really striking. They are seen coast-to-coast in the lower 48, but distribution is spotty in the west (some seen in Oregon). We used to have large numbers of evening grosbeaks in winter, but I have not seen one for decades. Black-headed grosbeaks are western, none east of the Mississippi according to the book.

Rose-breasted didn't make it into my "Birds of the Willamette Valley Region" book. Colors of the male Evening Grosbeak are striking as well. But have not seen any since moving to our new place two years ago. We only moved 15 miles so still holding out hope they'll find us. Beautiful shot of the Rose-breasted by the way.

Tropical Bokeh.

Was reminded on another thread about my trip to Costa Rica. Cropped more than I would like but there was a swamp keeping me from getting any closer.

Thanks for the compliment. According to the Sibley bird guide, rose-breasted grosbeaks have been reported rarely (very rarely) from northwestern-most Oregon, then inland south of the Washington border, then southeasterly.

And here is the plain-Jane female, also backed by nice smooth bokeh.
