The attachment lens for the 85-210 finally arrived so it can now focus to up to 1.9 meters instead of 3.5

Greater Prairie Chicken Tympanuchus cupido bokeh

Greater Prairie-Chicken Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

during the Wings and Wetlands festival in Great Bend, there was a side trip for a limited number ( first come, first serve ), a chance to see, hear and photograph Greater Prairie Chickens. one on Saturday and one on Sunday after the end of the festival. I got to go on Sunday. It was the first time I had ever seen or heard them.

[ this is on private land and access is carefully controlled to protect the birds, so access is limited by number and duration - two blinds with the birds being within 30 - 50 yards away. [ they neglected to tell us until we were leaving, otherwise, I would have turned off the GPS. ] They took the blinds out later that day. Please do not attempt to locate the area on by yourself for more info, you could attempt to contact the Kansas Wetlands Education Center: http://wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu/] ]

Here in the "Prairie State," there were a lot of prairie chickens at one time, but they were severely endangered by 1960 or before. We have a couple of Prairie Chicken sanctuary preserves, but not anywhere near where I live. They haven't bounced back the way that wild turkeys have, which were reintroduced in many places around the state. They seem to have trouble competing with introduced pheasants in areas where they are also present. Pheasants probably do better in areas with a lot of row crop land too, whereas Prairie Chickens might do much better on the sort of prairie grasslands (or at least large permanent pasture areas) that hardly exist in the state now.

it was an amazing experience, we has to walk into the blinds in the dark, wait as it got light, the birds flew in and could barely be seen and then began " booming " and would display

we were actually too late in the season, all hens ( the folks the day before saw one) had been " taken " and were on the nests and only two males appeared.

I took a ton of photos and slowly am working through them Used a K 3 II + DA 50mm F1.8 ( no luck really ) and a D FA 150-450mm (hand held and braced ) with some success

a few of the last photos of the event

It's a good thing there's bokeh in this image, otherwise the background would be too distracting and you would not concentrate on the main subject. BTW: Her hands are much too large - you did notice that, right?

Ambush bug almost engulfed by bokeh, but if you look closely the facets on his eye (= omatidia) are in focus.
