Great idea for using selective focus.

After a dark day in Wisconsin, I decided I needed to get out with the K-3ii and some glass. After washing dishes, I put the K 24/2.8 on the camera, tucked my A 50/2.8 macro in my jacket pocket, and headed to Governor Dodge State Park 15 miles to the south. The K 24/2.8 was a mistake; I should have brought the 3.5. And I expect I'd have been happier with my EBC Fujinon 55/3.5 macro. But I packed quickly, and used what I had.

I found a little spot I hadn't stopped at before, and there I found mosses, lichens, and fungi. All the photos below were made with the A 50/2.8 macro, mostly at f/8 or f/11--not the best for bokeh, but, well, some of it's pretty nice. . . .

Thanks, we’re very lucky here to have good air quality and climate that suits lichens.

Yes! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to live anywhere that lichens couldn't thrive. I don't travel much, but when I think of places I'd like to visit, they always have lichens in common. That means better air, little or no manufacturing, and fewer people. (I guess that leaves out most metropolitan areas, doesn't it?) ;-)

I remember seeing an exhibit of Eliot Porter's prints from Iceland, and just standing there, transfixed. I'm remembering more than a few prints of lichens in that show. For me, that was some of Porter's best work.

Anyway, places with lichens rank high on my list, always.

Another place for lichens and other flat-growing, extreme environment and marginal habitat plants is Antarctica. My daughter helped a botanist with labels for liverworts he collected there.
