Clematis, once established seems to be a hardy plant. The formula is supposed to be "cold feet, hot head" = the ground where planted should be shaded but the bush or vine should grow into open sunshine. I think I've planted clematis at least four times, possibly as many as six times to grow on the trellis over our well, and every one of them has dies within two to three years. Exasperating. This year a rose I planted there maybe five years back was covered with blossoms, more than I've ever seen on it. The image below is not a good example of bokeh, but I'll post it anyway. The rose was about four days past its peak.
