I have the Pentax one... and the matching 1:1 closeup filter... it is a great little lens, though it is mechanically not as well made as my FA50 Macro...
But I don't have nearly as many convenient dahlias for giving it a workout

That is very interesting to me. I had some curiosity along this line when I learned recently that the Phoenix was made by Hoya, and I recalled the Hoya-Pentax connections. I bought this lens way back when I first entered the digital age by acquiring a new K-10, and it was quite inexpensive, so cheap in fact that I have never given it much respect. I have usually used the Tokina-ATX 90mm f 2.5, the Pentax-D FA 50mm f 2.8, or the Kiron 105mm f 2.8, and always thought I should acquire the Pentax 100mm but never did. Trying out the Phoenix was an eye opener for me, and I find it to be quite good even without the closeup filter. Generally, 1:2 macro is quite enough for my flower photography. Nowadays, I also have the Zeiss 100mm f 2.0 macro 1:2 which pretty much trumps the field even though it is large and heavy. It is also MF, but I usually use MF for macro any way.
I love the dahlias for flower photography, and select the ones for my garden each year with next year's photography in mind, trying to pick the most photogenic models.
