Sigma 70-200 vs Pentax 60-250

Anyone used the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM and the PENTAX DA* 60-250MM F4 SDM LENS.

I've ordered a 60-250.. but, I can't find a TC to go with it. ANd I really wanted to get to 400mm. The Sigma also seems to be very highly recommended here on the site, I can get a TC off the shelf for it, but I can't find anything comparing the Image Quality of the lenses.

My experience with the 1200-400 is definitely affecting my desire to try another Sigma, returning two copies has taken a lot of my time, testing, and so far nothing to show for it. But, people are happy with the 70-200.

SO reluctantly, I'm asking if anyone knows both lenses.

For me, the IQ of the Sigma would have to be equal or better before I'd consider it.

Hi Norm,

I got the Pentax 1.7 AF TC second hand.
There is this guy on the forum selling "Old Stock, New in Box" Pentax and Kenko TC's in equipment for sale.
Also, Amazon in Japan has got a few on stock (7 when I just checked it out!)
Amazon.co.jpF HOYA F AFƒAƒ_ƒvƒ^[1.7X F AFƒAƒ_ƒvƒ^[1.7X: ‰“dEƒJƒƒ‰

Hope this helps.

One more thing Norm, people seem to have more experience with the older 70-200mm than the new OS one.

70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APOMacro HSM II - Telephoto Zoom Lenses - SigmaPhoto.com

However, it's no good with TC's:

From the website:
+++++++++++++++++++
*If the camera body does not support HSM motor, AF will not work.

* The appearance, specifications, and the like of the product are subject to change for improvement without notice.

* The angle of view depends upon the digital camera being used.

*Pentax and Nikon Mounts: Does not have aperture ring

*Nikon Mount: Built in motor lens: compatible with D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D5000
* The Pentax mount teleconverter is not compatible with this particular lens.
+++++++++++++++++++
Also, the newer one:

70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM | sigmaphoto.com

Cannot have a Sigma TC mounted to it, not from the Sigma website:
+++++++++++++++++++
*The Pentax mount Tele Converter cannot be used with this particular lens.
*Nikon and Pentax mounts do not have an aperture ring. Some functions may not work depending on the camera model.
*For Nikon and Canon mounts, Optical Stabilizer (OS) function will not work with film SLR cameras except Nikon F6 and Canon EOS-1V.
*For Pentax and Sony mounts, it is not possible to use the AF and the built-in OS function of this lens when attaching it to film SLR cameras as well as Pentax *ist series and K100D.
*When using the OS function of a lens with a camera which incorporates a stabilizer unit, please turn the cameras stabilizer unit off.
*The appearance, specifications, and the like of the product may be subject to change for improvement.
+++++++++++++++++++

If you can get the OLD model, without HSM and OS, you can mount both the 1.4 and the 2.0 TC's from sigma.

Good luck,

Bert

Well I guess that settles that issue. Now back to learning Japanese. At least I can pick up my 60-250 next week and be content that there wasn't a better option. Thanks.

I just took a few first shots with my 60-250 today. Absolutely stunning sharpness. I will try it with my Kenko 1.5x converter this week. I have heard that it works better with the 60-250 than it does with the DA*300

I can't find this lens listed for sale in Canada. The new HSM version is out in the Canon, Sony and Nikon mounts, but not for Pentax.

I think you will like the 60-250 option. It is a very nice lens. I sold my 50-135 to help fund it and Have absolutely no regrets.
