Dilemna: Selling my A 50mm f/1.2 to fund a K-5?!? (Read before voting)

EDIT: Thanks for the responses guys, I've decided to keep my 1.2

I didn't realize how strongly everyone felt about this lens! Now back to that buttery smooth bokeh, mmmm...

---------------------------------------------

As it says in the title I am wondering what other people would do, I'm really in agony over this since I love my 1.2.

BUT would it be better to sell it, get an FA-50 1.4 and save the rest of the money for a K-5? How much of a difference could I expect, how would people rate the differences between the two lenses? Am I maybe just psychologically attached to the 1.2 nomenclature? I blame the F/1.2 thread for making me buy one

Basically I need some convincing about selling my 1.2. I'm just crazing the 2 dials and overall better ergonomics of the K-5 over the K-x. Edit: Also would like the quieter shutter for street photography.

So, keep or sell?

I'm thinking to post on the market place in exchange for an FA-50 f/1.4 + $350 or $400; does that sound like a fair value?

Excuse me for the rambling, it's late and this question is haunting my mind

You should keep yours and have peace in mind.
If you need a 50 f1.4, get an M or A for cheap, but better save money for the k5.

I still want the k5, but not badly. No big events for me this year to justify for the purchase. Bodies are like PC hardware. They get better and cheaper every 18 months. I m still hoping for a FF to have full potensial of my lenses.

Please keep yours so I don't have to buy it. I ll keep mines...

I have the A50 1.2 and it would be the last lens I would sell, not only the image quality but the engineering of it has such an awesome feel. I also don't think you would get $350 or $400 on top of the FA.

Will be a bit of a downgrade in high ISO images and sensor dynamic range but what about a second hand K7?

The A50 1.2 does feel nice... you're making a convincing argument

I would consider the K7 but I use the high iso a lot since I shoot a lot of indoor bellydance photos, where a constant use of flash would end up blinding the performers

I have K-7, I must say that it has poor High ISO handling, but isn't that, where 1.2 comes in? With good lens, wich A 1.2 apparently is, you can shoot ISO 1600-2000 With out problem. (with some, but nothing significant. + it is quiet and qiute fast. 2-dials are nice too now I'm strugling, when there is not atleast 2 dials on hand...I'm waiting for a next model after K-5.

You would be crazy to sell the A50 f/1.2, its one of the best lens you can have on the pentax system not to mention rare and expensive.
I know how you feel about wanting 2 dials, i have a K200D and im wanting a K-5 badly too.

Keep the A50 (you WILL regret selling it) and sell everything else.

I've been thinking along similar lines with my K50/1.2. Love the lens but my trusty rusty K10 is due for replacement...plus I have 43ltd and at least I'd end up using that one more... But for now I'm sticking with it. And I think so should you. Truth is, it is one of the finest lenses one can buy for K mount. It easily rivals FA ltds and I'd say it leaves DA lenses in shame...and I agree that most probably you will end up regretting it's sale.

I still want an A50 f1.2 after I lost mine, but won't encourage you to sell yours.
The Kx is not bad at all. Personally, I m not so hook up with camera bodies. I use whatever with manual mode on it. You should use more of the f1.2 and @1.2 - if you don't have a split screen, get one; use nd filters at daylight or whatever you do, keep it!!!

The K-5 is an amazing camera.

The 1.2 is some fantastic art glass, but I don't know that it is the most amazing glass out there.

The down side is that in a year, the K-5 will lose value, and the A1.2 will increase in value.

Then again, I also have two A1.2 lenses. I got one through a deal, intending to sell it and haven't been able to bring myself to do so.

Finally, think of what you can shoot at F1.2 and 512000 ISO on the K-5. You can walk into a dark room and come out with pictures.

I don't know if the price will ever get to $800 - at least not until another generation Pentax is introduced, but I would keep what you have and save to get the K5 whenever you can afford it.

Keep it!

I just sold mine, but ONLY because I still have the Cosina 55/1.2, which I will never part with. I have owned the F50/1.7, as well as the FA 50/1.4. You would never be happy with such a downgrade, nevermind that they are AF lenses. Build quality on those (IMO) is about two grades below the A50/1.2. (OK, if I were hard-pressed I'd go with the F or FA50/1.7 over the 1.4...and you'll find it cheaper too.)

I too would like a K5, but the K20 does very well, and a new body is not such a priority anymore. I would still always focus on quality glass. Not sure how much profit you think you may end up with if you sold the A50, but even the minty ones from overseas Ebay sellers are only going for around ~600. And FWIW, I agree with Axl, if you end up needing a fast AF lens, really consider the FA 43 Ltd, it is wonderful. But keep that A50!

There isn't any way in hell I would sell the A50 f1:1.2 to replace it with the FA50. Sell the Kx instead when you get ready to make your purchase. Sell other stuff that you don't use if you must sell stuff to fund your purchase.

Simple answer to this. If you need the k5 badly just sell everything else that is disposable but keep the A1.2 the resell value of the k5 will drop every year that you own it however the A1.2 will only increase in value as the marketplace for these things become more rare. But if you must sell it. I'm pretty sure there are a couple of people here who would be happy to take it off your hands.

So I decided that I will keep the 1.2 thanks to all your responses that have made me come to realize just how much of a jewel this lens is! I guess I was unaware of how much I would lose in quality since I've never used an FA-50 1.4

Thanks again everyone!
