I can tell you what I take on my regular trips to SF to see grandkids etc and wander around.

Basic kit: Tamron 10-24; DA18-250; FA50/1.4; Sigma 170-500
Downtown kit: tiny Enna 100/4.5 for day shots; 85/2 for night
Specialty kit: DA10-17; Vivitars: Komine 28/2 CFWA or Kiron 24/2

For the DA18-250 I take filters: CPL, GND, and Yellow (for shooting glaring neon lights at night). And sometimes a cheap screw-on 0.25x fisheye adapter for full-circle FE fun. The huge Lil'Bigma is great for grabbing people from a distance, and for the compressed perspective. The tiny Enna 100 is smaller than a Tak55 and is great for stealthy headshots -- it doesn't LOOK tele. The DA10-17 is mandatory in some tight spaces. Both the Vivitars are great for close shots, and many details in SF are worth close scrutiny.

But if pressed, I could survive there with just the Tamron 10-24, FA50/1.4, and DA18-250 with filters. Wide IS good. Fast IS good. Flexible IS good. That's why I prefer those three. No, they're not all primes. So sue me. If I was *forced* to carry just primes, they'd probably be: Zenitar 16/2.8; Vivitar-Kiron 24/2; FA50/1.4; Takumar Bayonet 135/2.8. OK, that's four primes. But I couldn't get by with fewer.

I think I will have to keep the 15 in the bag. Although I have used it mostly for architecture, etc. and my shots have not been amazing yet, I think I just need to get more creative with it. It will be too valuable as a wide angle in the narrow streets of Europe...

Also, I will just have to make a choice b/w the 35 and 40 which have many threads (one started by me). I am leaning 35 right now...(the question is still whether to sell the 40).

I am going to get the 70. I have nothing similar and it sounds like it rocks. For travel it might be a "specialty" area for me as I don't shoot a ton of mid tele, but it will be super useful sometimes and in non-travel situations (portraiture).

So my basic travel kit would be 15/35/70...

So I guess my questions have boiled down to whether the 21 is a nice addition to fill the gap (of which there are other threads I have been reading). And whether I should splurge on the 21 instead of getting the kit with the K-7. Perhaps I should start another thread. But feel free to chime in with any additional thoughts...
The 21mm is my favorite lens, and if I only had one lens, it would be it. But to be fair, on 35mm I prefer 35mm as my normal lens. My 43mm is a fantastic lens but it's too long. 35mm is a better FL 52 vs 62 is somehow just enough.

I like the idea of the fuji x100 btw, as a backup and a fast 35mm prime. Great idea. My backup is my fuji x10. I think having two bodies is essential.

If I was bringing a 3 lens kit, it would be 15, 21, 70. If I brought a tripod (carbon, lightweight, just functional) and my panoramic head, I'd opt for either the 35 or 43mm as well.

The 21 would be on the camera most of the time, with the 15 and 70 being situation lenses. The 15 is, imo, too wide for a standard lens.

I love zombie threads

DA21 and DA70 always come along. As does the kit DA18-55WR because it always rains and I can wipe water off it with my T-shirt without worrying too much ...

Well seeing as we're discussing this afresh, here's my take on the matter:

Lowepro Nova 1 AW Shoulder Bag (Red/Black) 2037180 B&H Photo

This is my camera bag. In it, I carried my K-5 with the DA21 mounted, and stacked off to the side behind the divider were the DA15, DA40 and DA70 and a reversing ring for the SMC-M 40/2.8 I had on the ME in my vest pocket. I also managed to stuff in the charger and its cord, a spare battery, a tabletop tripod and a wired cable release. I could have fitted the DA35 macro in on top of the camera, but didn't want to risk it overseas. When the camera was out, the lenses parked in the larger part of the bag so I could reach in and swap them over more easily than having to dig through a stack, and if necessary just drop them in without the rear cap if I was in a hurry.

A K-1 with the FA43 is pretty much all I would ever need digitally speaking

Prime Travel Kit: 2 or 3 lenses?
I tend to utilise these three "Ladies" if I'm running lightweight... my "Good Lady” (SMC Pentax-A 20mm F2.8), my "Special Lady” (SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.2) and my "Lady Luck” (SMC Pentax-A* 135mm F1.8).

Hopefully the rest I can make up for using legs, so far... this lens combo has never failed or prevented me get the required shots.

Ooh ooh, can I play? 15mm Ltd, F 28mm 2.8 (bet you didn't expect that!) and a DA L 50-200mm WR (plastic mounts are lighter) (lot of nice 50-200 WR sample shots here; Smc Pentax-DA L 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED WR | Sample Photos for Pentax Cameras & Lenses - PentaxForums.com)

I may have to look into this one for my ME or MX. The 135/3.5 M isn't exactly huge, but this sounds like a new level of small. Just when I thought I was out of LBA, it pulls me back in.

Been there, done that, love it. Great for the big city. For open rural locations, I would be very tempted to leave the 70 home and bring the 135/3.5 M along; it's the smallest of my 135s and could probably replace the 70. Then the question would be, DA15 or DA21 to leave home? The DA15 is, in my experience, not the best lens to use when people pictures are intended, while the 21 is probably wide enough for landscape at a pinch.

I have two of those and almost bought the third. I may get it eventually - it depends on how long the K-5 lasts and exactly how pleasant the DA lenses really are to use in crop on a K-1.
