I'm sorry but you are both wrong.

The DA 35 Ltd is a very sharp lense but isn't even near the 43 Ltd at ANY aperture, here are the MTF figures that prove it :

35 Ltd

Pentax SMC DA 35mm f/2.8 Limited macro - Review / Test Report - Analysis

43 Ltd

Pentax SMC-FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited - Review / Test Report - Analysis
I think the DA35/2.8 macro has to give up some compromise as well. especially being a LTD macro lens, it has to give up some optical elements inorder to fit the size description of a limited. so that could be a factor in terms of sharpness. I'm not sure however which lens has more contrast (micro level) though. contrast or microcontrast is another criteria for macro lenses. but anyways, I think all of us would agree that "in general", macro lenses are just much better than standard lenses.

A*300/2.8 outresolved the sensor on my K20D when stopped down a little. You saw the detail in every pixel and no blur.
Same goes for A*85/1.4, A*200/4 macro, A*200/2.8.

But some cheaper lenses are very sharp too - like Sigma 30/1.4 when stopped down to f4, most 50mm lenses when stopped down, Samyang 14mm, etc

A sharp lens but with shallow DOF is useless to me. I've seen enough macro shots but extremely few could bring the entire tiny insect in focus.
They might be able to if you stopped down far enough, but that's missing the point. A macro lens does *not* have shallower DOF than any other lens. it's just capable of taking shots other lenses couldn't. if the other lenses *could* take those closeups, they'd have shallow DOF too. And if you use your macro lens for non-macro shots, it will have exactly the same DOF as a non-macro lens taking the same shot.

FA35/2 is very sharp @f2, thought not as sharp as 43@2.8 from MTF figures, it should be better at f2 compared to 43

I know I know, those are the charts...

I'm just saying, I owned the FA 43 ltd and the DA 35 ltd. And I eventually sold the FA 43, because the pictures that came from the 35 were sharper. The FA43 was left unused.

Maybe I had a bad copy of the FA43? Or a super excellent copy of the DA35?

I stopped trying to read MTF's anyway. The MTF of the 18-55 kitlens shows excellent center sharpness at most apertures. Go figure.
