Would you replace a DA17-70 with the 18-250?

I'm currently considering my lens selection having recently bought the DA12-24 (terrific lens). I now have the 12-24, DA 17-70, DA 35mm F2.4 and the DA 55-300.

My main photography is landscape and the new 12-24 is likely to meet most of this need, effectively making the 17-70 a little obsolete as the DA 35mm/55-300mm will meet the needs for any longer focal lengths.

My thoughts are now on when I'll use the 17-70 and it's probably mainly going to be on holiday trips - this has started me thinking that the the 18-250 might be a better choice, it's certainly a more conveneient "walkabout" range. I just wondered if anyone else had considered the same issue, would I regret replacing the DA 17-70 with the 18-250?

thanks

Simon

Not quite the same issue, but -
I replaced the 16-45 and 55-300 with the 18-135WR, and have no regrets. It has the weather seals but not the range of the 18-250, and a near-silent motor.
Very few will speak against the 18-250 though, in my case WR trumped the extra range.

I still have the 50-200WR, so much of the 55-300 was covered before the changeover.

Unless you want to travel with only one lens, there is no reason to get the 18-250. You have good lenses, I'd take them all. Or just sell the 17-70, as the 35 fits in the gap.

This is something else I'm considering, in fact on a recent holiday I actually left the 17-70 at home and I didn't really miss it

May as well sell it or replace it with a lens you would actually use and find useful.

I had the 18-250, and now have the 17-70, and I'm glad I switched. The 18-250 is slower than the 55-300, which I also have (and have had for some time now), more so than the numbers indicate. I believe the max. aperture of the 55-300 at 190mm is f/4.5. I don't remember what the 18-250 did at that FL, but I think it was about 2/3 stop slower on average. That made me decide to keep the 55-300, and the 17-70 goes with it very nicely in terms of focal length.

Also, the 18-250 had really bad vignetting at almost all focal lengths. I know it can be removed in post-processing, but I just don't want to bother.

So while the 18-250 might be good for what it is (it's sharper than the 18-55 kit at the same FL), it's not for me.

Thanks for the feedback...I couldn't resist comparing the DA17-70 vs 18-250 for myself so have just picked up a Tamron 18-250 at a decent price used, I'll keep the one I prefer and sell the other on - the comparison should be interesting

Having just received the Tamron initial impressions are very positive, I'm surprised how close the IQ seems to be to the Pentax and am seriously considering keeping the Tamron and selling on the Pentax, the Tamron appears to be the ideal "walkaround/travel" lens.

I've yet to take many realworld shots with the Tamron however as I'm waiting for some better weather, in the meantime though I wondered if anyone had replaced a DA17-70 with an 18-250 and regretted it ?

thanks

Simon
