I have updated the first post with two pictures taken in an outdoor setting (with difficult/busy background).
Thanks.

The focus point for the DA* 55 is a bit more further back (too much, the eyes aren't in perfect focus anymore).

The Tak shows considerably more blur (look at the size of the blur circles). Probably just a combination of the different focus point and the wider than equivalent aperture.

The Tak shows a green tinge that I see with many older Pentax lenses. Not very pleasant to my eyes. Have you tried to achieve the same WB for these two images as well?

Thanks for posting these great examples.

What stands out to me is that the images are a lot more alike than they are different, to a surprising extent. I really expected more difference. Maybe if a canon 85mm lens was used on the 5D we'd see more significant differences in the rendering ?

I doubt you would see a lot of difference. The biggest differences would be in things like white balance and colors, which you would want to fix to be the same prior to posting a comparison.

See, for me the issue is the extra 5-700 grams you'd be carrying with the C*anon/Tak combo.

Probably not much in the hand in a given instant, but if you have to carry it around all day? No way.

Best camera = the one you have with you. The size/weight of combos like that are what brought me over to Pentax. I *was* shooting with a 5DII and 100mm f2 Zuiko. Now *that* lens is AMAZING, which is similar weight to that C*non + Tak combo (but even BETTER image quality, if you can believe that).

But I'm reckoning a DA70 or FA77 will get me in the ballpark at half the weight.

Thanks for the nice comments! To be fair this was not a scientific excercise, but it was fun nonetheless because I wanted to see with my own eyes how one could get *almost* the same result with different tools and a different sensor size.

I manually whitebalanced the two shots (using the white shirt as a basis), but I'm not sure how the different camera's color responses are responsible (in conjunction with the different lenses' characteristics). I'm sure that with a little tweaking I could get almost the same output from both cameras.

I will probably take more comparison shots in the coming weeks, of different subjects. Just for fun of course, I don't want to "prove" anything. Any outcome is perfectly OK with me.

Good attitude. Looking forward to more shots.

I think he looks slightly happier in the DA*55 shots.

The difference is there in both sets.

Seriously though, thanks for the comparison!

I'd like to see a couple shots stopped down a bit, where the bokeh from both lenses should smooth out and get a little more interesting (to me, anyway--after all, the Tak has how many blades?)

They're hard to count, but yes the Tak has a round aperture at any f/stop. However, the DA* 55 has rounded blades too.
