The BIG Sigma 30mm

BIG one

the sigma 30mm f.14 suffers from bad lens distortion and some CA's on contrasty scenes

However.... from f/1.4 up to f/4 is is something remarcable! comparable to the SY85 f/1.4 and the other champion the SY14mm f/2.8. Compelements the M35 f/2.0 lens perfectly which is strong from f/4 on .

The minimum focusing dustance is .... crap.... takes away a lot of the fun I would otherwise have with this lens.

The AF is .... usleless, I use only the Live View AF, which is working fine (it seems)

The performance above f/6 is dismal... not its territory...

Its also a special beast. Outperforms easily the pentax lenses I have on wide appertures. It will be a tough match against the SY35mm f/1.4 but I have no more time to experiment I have to actually do some shooting and enjoy

Will add some more photos next weekend This is one I quickly took from my flat and a 100% crop @f/4 of the center. Hum hummm

Sorry for resurrecting this thread....again...... but I just noticed that there are some new reviews for the Samyang 35mm f1.4 up on Photozone. They are a little more in depth then the Lens Tip reviews. Aparently they only tested the lens on Canon and Nikon, but at least everyone can get a better feel for it.

on Canon Full Frame
Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC (EOS) - Full Format Format Review / Test Report

on Canon APS-C
Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC (EOS) - APS-C Format Review / Lab Test Report

on Nikon Full Frame
Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC (Nikon FX) - Review / Test Report

Looks to be a better lens then I initially thought. Though it seems to have the Bokeh issues that were suspected from earlier sample images.

Optically competitive with the Canon/Nikon lenses, at a fraction of their price.

APS-C results are quite good.

I have two complaints. 1.> not AF. 2.> I would had preferred a 28mm, but not necessarily an f1.4 nor slower than f2.

Yeah, the shorter the lens (in fl), the more trouble i have focusing it accurately on the tiny APS-c viewfinder - I really need AF on the short lenses. I don't have any trouble on the 35mm film camera with a 28, but can't focus it on APS-c to save my life.

In some ways, it's actually better:

"Here the Zeiss distinctly prevails over the Nikkor, the Sony or the Canon but it loses to…the Samyang. The Samyang is exactly the lens which corrects the lateral chromatic aberration the best of all the group of 1.4/35 class instruments."

Anyone recently got the Samyang 35 to share his experience and examples?

Not that I am aware of. It's posted in the lens database, but there are no reviews for it yet. But there are several reviews on other sites for this lens. Check out Photozone.
Hopefully someone has purchased it, and just haven't had time to review it yet. I know I want it, I just can't justify the cost right now. In the mean time, my DA 35mm 2.4 is SCARY SHARP, and has excellent color and contrast from wide open.

I have it in Nikon mount. It's just about as good as the 85/1.4, IMO.

Other then that, what do you think about it. Is it sharp enough, hows contrast, color tone, flare control, and handling. Is it worth the money?

Some test shots from the D700 + Vivitar-branded 35mm f/1.4 (cross-posted from the FF thread):

I think it's plenty sharp, and more importantly it's actually pretty damn sharp across the frame, even on FF. Distortion is there but a) minimal, and b) easily correctable. Contrast isn't super-high at 1.4, but that's what LR3 is for. Bokeh isn't stellar like the 85/1.4, but this is a wide-angle lens and finding one with superb bokeh is rarer than rare. It's certainly better than the psychedelic bokeh of the Nikkor 35/1.4 Ai-s it replaced. I have no complaints regarding flare or color rendition.

At $449 it's a helluva deal. Better (though far larger) than the Nikkor it replaced, and less than a third the cost of a used(!) Nikon 35/1.4G AF lens.

I am REALLY impressed with the bokeh on that lens, and the shallow DOF it offers on FF! Very jealous of that setup DWB

deadwolfbones, thank you very much! I am really impressed by the nice, creamy bokeh and the shallow depht. Also love the old-film-like image of the shots.
This is the next lens I will have.

Note that all of those are post-processed to some degree or another. Film-like look available separately from lens.
