Variations in Tokina SD 80-200/2.8?

First off, to be clear, I'm talking about the SD version of this lens and not one of the many later incarnations.

Over the years I've owned two, one in Nikon mount, the other in Canon EF.

The Nikon mount copy was remarkably good, so much so that I sold my Nikkor 180/2.8 because they were so comparable. This is with a ~20 year memory buffer however . . .

The Canon EF, which I had last year, was good at short focal lengths but got progressively worse when zoomed longer. I found it almost worthless at 200mm unless stopped down to f/5.6 or more. Pretty much defeated the purpose of it so I sold it at a loss, disclosing the performance issue.

What is your experience with this lens? I'd like to believe my earlier encounter was the rule because I now have one available to me in Pentax mount but have concerns that it may perform like the Canon EF copy.

TIA!/Scottax1
