Congrats on the K85f1.8.

I am more concern about light and controlling light. The DA50-200 is just fine if you have good light.

The K85f1.8 is a fine lens, but for a cheap, zoom portrait lens, I was going to recommend:
SMC PENTAX F 1:3.5-4.5 35-70mm (I have a review among the many on that page.) For about $30, it is really and excellent and versatile lens in a good range on APS-C.

Look up "Cowboy Studios" on Amazon. They have a very good selection of cheap lighting gear with very decent build quality. There are some other bargain brands that will pop up when you're looking at the Cowboy Studios gear as well. Get a stand or two with a flash mount, a cheap umbrella softbox/shoot through umbrella and a collapsable reflector with different coloured sheets for backgrounds and you'll be well on your way...

Too bad no one makes something like a 35/40mm to 85/90mm F2.8 (with macro would be extra nice). But like said already, you don't need a fast lens if you have good lighting.. true, but you DO need a semi-fast lens to close up that DoF!

I am sure the K 85/1.8 will do well for you, if not I will buy it. ;-) I would agree with the F 35-70 as the best old AF Pentax zoom for under $50, and I would also mention that the FA-J 75-300 is quite good at 75mm (less so at 300, but that's not really portrait range).

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Samyang 85/1.4, available for new at ~$250 and an A lens to boot.

yeah but 85mm is "optimal portrait range" for a full frame camera.. so cropped your looking around 56mm or as close to it for a prime.. hence why fast 50's are so commonly used now. But thats probably why the OP is looking for a zoom, to cover the common portrait focal ranges. Even at that, I think a Samyang 85mm f1.4 would be a pretty decent lens.. but isn't it MF? Doesn't bother me, but some shooters prefer to stick with AF lenses only.

Yes, but so is the K85/1.8 that was bought in the end, so the AF requirement got dropped from the picture.
