B) I walk around with the 70, among others. The MFD is about 2 feet or so, as mentioned.
This seems to be one of the only drawbacks of this lens. I don't doubt that it's an issue given the amount of people that point it out, but I'm wondering how often you shoot within 2 ft of the subject with a 70mm.

To DA 70 users: Other than for macro type shooting, does this really get in the way for you? What types of scenarios are a challenge for you?

0.7m is already pretty close for this FL. FA77 has 1.2m in comparison. If you want to get closer, you really should consider a macro.

I also think I prefer 70 or lower for portraits in informal settings on digital
I really, really, want them to release the DA* 55 in a non WR non SDM limited package. It would be a phenomenal little lens.
OK, we had some differences in past days but on these two points I'll very happily agree with you!
Something along 50/1.4 Ltd would be terrific, heck given it would be Ltd I'd even take remake of F/FA50/1.7...
And for the informal portraits, I again have to agree. Somewhere between 50 and 70 would the right length IMHO but yes, it's very subjective...

I love the DA's compactness, lightness, and totally reliable performance across the frame.
With the hood on is the DA70 all that much smaller than 77?

Once you stick the hood on the 70, the size difference is pretty minimal.

The problem with the FA 77 is PF that clings to the bokeh of the OOF specular highlights.

*snip*
??? What PF?

My copy does not exhibit this phenomenom.

Looks great NaCl.

I've seen people posting images showing it, and I'm not sure what exactly causes it.

Here's a thread discussing the issues (NB: No real conclusion is drawn).

Hard to say. I absolutely hate it because I'm not good enough at PP to remove it.

In any case I still think that the DA 70 is a little better as an every day, but th FA 77 is the best limited for portraits. The low DOF effects one can achieve with the FA 77 would be most useful in portrait applications.

Sad but true, I almost never use my 77.
Can I interest you to sell your paperweight to me?
I'd pay an "above average paperweight price".

Well, the DA 70 weighs 130 grams versus 270 grams for the FA 77.

I think the real question comes down to whether or not you need the extra half stop of speed versus a little faster autofocus/ quick shift ability that the DA 70 offers.

The advice is - buy one - either one. Both are good.

Do it now!

Sorry. It isn't a lens I will ever sell.
I've only ever sold a few lenses, and I miss them all terribly.

Used both the FA 77 and the DA 70 and if I had to choose, it is definitely the FA 77. But if you don't want to spend too much, can live with a mere f/2.4, then the DA 70 is a good option.
I've tried two copies of the FA 77 and never found PF to be a problem so those with PF issues with their FA 77 might have got a poor copy. It happened to me with my FA 43, first copy was crap, second copy was good.

I can't say mine never does it, but it is pretty rare and certainly not as prevalent as one might be led to believe. For mine about the only situation that might produce it is if the sun is directly behind and being eclipsed by my subject. That's a tough situation for any lens.

Well, I was replying to Axl's post about how the hood of the DA70 makes it about the same size (height) as the FA77. You are of course correct that it still weights about twice as much. But at the end of the day, both are small lenses and I would think the other differences (max speed, cost, AF) would be more important than the 140 grams or a few millimeters in height.

FWIW, I've owned both and kept the 77. That was in part because I preferred it to the 70, but also because I thought it complimented my DA*50-135 better than the 70 did.
