Which lens for K10d

I bought my first digital camera (K10d) a few months ago and I like it. When I bought the body, I also purchased a Tamron 18-200 (either the 18-250 was not out yet or I just missed it). In my 30 years of using a film SLR I only used primes and thought I would like the convenience of a zoom. It is convenient, but the results are not as sharp as I would like and the 18-200 is perhaps a bit slow and longer than I really need.

I am now considering replacing the Tamron with a Sigma 17-70 as my only lens for now OR keeping the Tamron and adding a DA 40 Limited or a DA 70 Limited. When I used a Nikon F3, the Nikkor 105mm was on my camera 90% of the time.

I like to travel light and the convenience of a zoom is nice, but I think I was spoiled using primes all those years. Budget constraints do not permit me to buy 2 or 3 primes to replace the Tamron at this point in time.

I realize the choice is mine, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bob

I have 5 zooms. You should buy primes because it is obviously what you think is best for you.

I have the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 which I use as my primary lens. Although it does not go very wide, for general use its excellent. I also have the Sigma 55-200mm F3.5-5.6 for longer shots, and is very compact. These two might be worth looking at if you want to go down the Zoom route, with the 24-70 almost being as good as several primes within that range.
I am now looking at the Pentax 10-17mm for wide and the Sigma 50-500 for ultra long (aka the Bigma) but of course the Bigma is not cheap and very heavy, so not good for travel.

Hope this helps

How about a FA77 limited? Its FOV would be very close to film 105mm.

I went through many different zooms in all different price range, now I stick with primes (with one exception). But its all personal preference, I find brightness, across the frame sharpness, low CA, OOF rendering and small lens size are more important to me than the 'convieniance' of a zoom.. But its all a trade-off, and based on your personal taste.

Unless of course you can afford to buy a nice collection of both..

Get a 40mm limited to have what you were used to and a zoom to cover the other focal lengths you might want...If 90 percent was done with that one lens then you'll not change much after going digital.

Decision and Thanks

I want to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions.

I have just ordered the DA 70 Limited. I'll keep the zoom for now for the convenience and use the prime when image quality is paramount. Although the DA 70 is not the smallest pancake, I think I can add it to my travel bag and not notice it.

I am buying in Japan, but I have an address in the States. I will send in the rebate form, but I am not hopeful.

Thanks again,

Bob
