Someone I know showed me this earlier today. Soon to be for sale for a pretty price.

Looks to me like the black paint probably started to chip away around the aperture rings and instead of having it half paint/half bare metal they choose to remove the rest of the paint and make it all metal. Just my guess.

looks like the person who gave that old bugger a mold-cleaning job, got a little too creative on some outside parts...

a while back, there were 8 50mmF1.2 lenses on EBAY as a lot, all showing varrying degrees of loss of paint and mold/fungus.

anyone checked the serial number?

might belong to that group

I think by "pretty" he meant "premium"... which of course is silly for a K50/1.2 that has been stripped of its paint. I think the majority of people would feel that the value would go down, not up

Maybe it was fitted with parts that were never anodized? I don't see any tool marks that would have resulted from removing existing paint.

unless the person is a skilled machinist. I'm not saying it can't be done, but with proper tools and know how, it would be easy to strip it clean. I'm not sure though why would Pentax release a non-anodized version unless it is a prototype.

One thing I find weird is the last ribbed ring in "plalin metal finish" right above the rear cap. My K50 doesn't have that ring.... any ideas?

On a side note, if someone was bothered to do this, they should have gone all the way and strip the distance scale of the paint too....

Could it be part of a converted mount... maybe it's not longer a K mount lens

To strip the focus scale, you'd probably have to disassemble the lens to prevent paint flakes from getting stuck inside the barrel (?) Not sure. But you're right, it would look better if that were done as well.

I don't think that stripping paint only will create such a shinning metal finish. It must be the result of anodizing process. Correct me if I'm wrong, those anodized parts are the ones that can be disassembled without touching the lens' glasses? They didn't anodize the other half because it is where the lens' glasses are. Anodizing this part would mean a total tear-down that could end up in misplacement of those glass elements.

All the trouble 'creating' this must be the reason for it's high price for the owner, but for those who prefer originality it is the other way around.

Not really. The filter ring is in metal colour too! To get to that one on this lens you must take off the front element group and the focusing ring! On the other side, to take the distance scale out, you don't need to touch the glass. I've tried it myself...

And yes, I agree that the lens might have been converted to other mount going by the thin extra ring...

The parts could have simply have been chromium electroplated, but from the look of things I would say someone is using powder metallurgy to replicate components that were damaged on the original lens. If you look there are a few chips off the paint on the focusing ring, it takes some hard living to do that to a lens. I can only imagine what the rest of the original lens barrel looked like.
