I don't know why appropriate lens hoods are of so little importance during the design process. This is partially also true for prime lenses but I'm mainly talking about zooms.

I still find Canon's 24-70 L brilliant. Best protection at every FL.
Does this retrozoom design have so many drawbacks that it's uncommon or is it just tradition?

About the 35/2.4: every lens hood desgned for 50mm on 35mm film should be okay.
I'd just go for a 49mm "standard" lens hood.
