No. Regarding these 3 lenses the 1.7/50 is by far the worst.
The old SMC beats them all easily for MF. No surprise.
But the Pentax-F is no better than the 16-50. Focus throw is way more generous on the 1.7/50 (160 vs. 60) but its ring is so loose that you have no feeling in it.
I really hate this lens I have to say. If it wasn't such a good performer I wouldn't have bought it.
Even though the Sigma not even has half of the SMC's throw it isn't much harder to focus.

I don't know why but with the 1.7/50 the image didn't pop into focus as with the other two.

Overall conclusion:
The 16-50 is the most expensive piece of junk I've ever bought. It's a zoom and all but only a 3x zoom. Not that extreme.
Ok, this was at its longest and also quite close but this is just poor.

The Sigma's huge front element leads to less vignetting - as to be expected and already proven.
The newer design gives better resolution capabilites at wide open but can't beat the other lenses over f/2.8.
Also nothing surprising.

The 16-50 seems to have the best light transmission. I can't tell what actual apertures were but it is the brightest. Followed by the Pentax-F 1.7/50.

when I said impressive, I was referring to the IQ of the 1.7, not the focusing. although if you were referring to the substandard IQ that you might be experiencing with your copy, I can't disagree with you on that.

I also agree with you with regards to the 16-50 and I can't see it being that great at 50mm. I believe that is why we have the 55/1.4.

I was referring to this part:
QuoteQuote:
in other words, focusing with the 50/1.7 isn't as forgiving as other lenses with a longer focus throw.
Out of the 4 lenses involved it has the second longest focus throw and still it is no better for MF than the 16-50 - which *has* damping.

I didn't mean to say that the 1.7/50's overall performance is the worst.
This award clearly goes to the 16-50...
At least it shines at 16mm.

I see. anyway, I wasn't restricting the focus throw to the 4 lenses but others as well. although thank you for the clarification. I thought you didn't like the IQ.

Sigma 50mm is the best when it comes it IQ. Not the smallest or the cheapest, but AF is fast and quiet. It is the sharpest at f/1.4 - f/4. The DA* 55mm would be my second choice, but it is not on the list.

I'm accepting shipments of additional lenses.
I'd even test them then.
Still would need a real lab for reliable results. Send that too.

BUMP!
See first post for bokeh comparison. No crops this time - not necessary I think.
Have fun.

At least for me all thumbnails still show up.
Nobody else complained yet - so either nobody cared or you're the first one to experience this...

New Zealand isn't censoring the internet, is it?
I'd be very surprised if pic-upload would block certain IPs.

All I can say you can do is dowload EVERYTHING!!!!!!
No, really. Download links should still work fine. And if you can solve these stupid verification questions (hate them) then you can have the full-sized ones.
No solution but a workaround if you really want to see them.
