Which lens should I keep?

Just wanted to do a quick poll on which lens I should keep:

Pentax-F 50mm 1.4

or

Pentax-FA 50mm 1.7

I understand they are both great lens that are often difficult to come by but I would like to get a wider fast prime, so which one should I let go?

I'd keep the f1,7, because:

1-the f1,4 will get you a higer selling point

2-the f1,7 is sharper wide open than the f1,4 at f1,8

3-it's more of a rarity

The f1,4 does give you a wee bit more speed, and a wee bit smoother bokeh, but is less sharp at wider apertures (they're about equal starting at f2,8)

I would echo SpecialK comments...

However, you already have quite a number of comments on each of the lenses in the Lens Review sectionFA 50/1.4 8.84F 50/1.4 9.6
... but it really comes down to what you like...

I voted for 50/1.7. Used to have the F version and haven't stopped regretting selling it since Jan 2010.
I think you'd end up the same....

My vote: the F50/1.4. The quality is very good. The speed can be crucial. It's just more flexible in usage than even the best f/1.7. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.

A question nobody can answer without additional information.
Both your lenses are very rarely seen.

If you like bokeh, keep the F 1.4/50. It has 8 aperture blades. The 1.7/50 only has 6.
From f/2.8 and up the difference is very striking.

Need less field curvature, probably better edge sharpness (near) wide open?
Go for the 1.7/50.

Sell them both and get a A 1.2/50 instead? No idea what these things actually sell for. But it will be a lot.

1.4 for sure. the 1.7 is a little sharper wide open but everywhere else the 1.4 looks better.

if he doesn't need AF, this would make sense.

While there is the case to be made that the F 1.4 has superior bokeh, I voted to keep the FA 1.7. If you ever yearn for an auto focus f/1.4 lens, one can easily be found. The auto focus f/1.7 lenses are harder to come by. I'll leave it to the more aesthetically minded to hammer out the bokeh issue. I guess I'm a member of the sharpness bourgeoisie that sees the f/1.7 50mm variants as the sweet spot. Like Axl, I once sold an f/1.7 50mm and I ended up buying three to replace it.
