do i have the right hood???

i just got myself a new lens today!!! i just started getting into photography and already lens buying addiction has set in. anyway i got a M 35/2.8. pretty excited about it. the guy at the store threw in a hood but its not the original. its an olympus hood and on the side it says "50mm 1.4 50mm 1.8 35mm 2.8" so it seems that they just package this hood with three different lenses. however i have a pentax lens not an olympus. what do you think? should this hood do the job? or is its design simply not for my equipment? anyway the lens appears to be in great condition so i am excited to go out and take some shots, just wondering if the hood is going to help me.

Any hood is better than no hood. The brand does not matter, it's the hood depth (we have another thread all about this at the moment). A deeper hood (since this can be used on a 35mm lens on film) would give you better stray-light protection--one meant for a 50mm film lens (and no wider) would probably be about ideal.

It should be fine. I use the same hood for my 35mm and 50mm with no vignetting problems at all. As long as you are comfortable with it's appearance, it doesn't block the lens, and fits your lens correctly you should be good to go.

The hood you have will probaly be too short for your lens but this lens isn't that prone to flare so it should be totally fine.
