Zeiss: which lens to choose.

Hi,

I am planning to buy Zeiss 35mm F2 ZK Distagon or Zeiss 28mm F2 ZK. My main use is to take pictures of family gathering or bigger gathering like birthday party.

Can somebody advise me which to choose based on their experience?

I will also consider Voigtlander 40mm F/2 Ultron if it is superior to Zeiss.

I would appreciate if sample pictures are shown.

Thanks.

It depends on which FL you are more comfortable. I'd skipped the 28 and got the 35 and 25 altogether (ok, and the 85 as well). But for your use, I would think the wider the better? But the 28 is about the fastest you can get for <30mm...

personally, I would take the 28mm any day of the week. although, if you can afford the 28, why not get the FA31?

If you want a Zeiss ZK new, better get one while they are still available.

The 35mm Distagon is my first Zeiss and I have no regrets, it now lives on my K7. The problem with this lens is that now I want the Zeiss 50mm & 100mm makro-planar lenses too.

Here's a shot from a recent ice storm:

If you are rich enough to get either, why not consider the FA31 instead? Otherwise, there is not much reason shooting Pentax. But for parties, you don't need the sharpest lens in the world. Besides, I would get something wider.

some have suggested that I use FA 31 ltd instead of zeiss. I choose zeiss because of micro contrast and colors it produces. Also not to mention the 3D effect. Looking at the pic posted by
cmmurray it clearly demonstrates the micro contrast and colors aspect. Can FA31 ltd do the same thing?

For parties I would buy the DA 21.

The FA 31 is likely the best prime Pentax makes.. it's got a lot of sharpness microcontrast colour you name it... now sure why you would want to overlook that one!

actually when I suggested the FA31 was because of AF and not 3D effect. if that wasn't your concern, then the Zeiss 35/2 and Zeiss 28/2 are not logical purchases at all for your use. you said that you are going to use it for family gathering and you want something with nice contrast and colors. if that was your intention and don't necessarily need the speed for 3D effect, then there are other logical and way way cheaper options like the Pentax K28/3.5 and K35/2 or K35/3.5. honestly it's a waste of money if that was your reason for buying a Zeiss. but anyway, technically speaking, the K's that I mentioned were Zeiss as well, except that they are cheaper.

but if you are feeling extravagant, I would still recommend the FA31 which has a nice micro-contrast and colors (but may not be the type you are looking for). might as well look at the FA31 samples.

I have the Zeiss 28/2 and while it is a wonderful lens, you should be aware that in the near field, it does exhibit some field curvature. That could be pertinent to you depending on how close you get to the party-goers. Of course, it can also be used to creative effect if you so desire. If you want the Zeiss flavor, and indeed, it is sweet, then I would suggest the 35 for your use. If you are not married to the idea of Zeiss, then I would also consider the FA31.

I faced the same dilema and decided to go with the FA 31 because of autofocus. It's a very convenient feature when taking pictures at birthday parties. Best lens out there IMHO.

I think Zeiss 35 ZK is better than 31 Limited. But on a crop camera its charm
is lost a bit. If you want the specific Zeiss look, I would suggest Zeiss 25 ZK.
There is still a few left, grab one while you can. It's a great lens, underrated
for some reason. It's gonna give you ~32mm on a Pentax camera.
Zeiss 21 ZK is amazing, but again on a crop camera it's not as wide as it really is.
Zeiss 25 ZK covers a focal length Pentax doesn't have any answer to
and it is Zeiss magical
I think for Pentax two best Zeiss lenses are 100 MP and 25.

It's actually gonna be about 37.5mm. I don't have any experience with the 25, but in general, the 18 and the 25 are considered the weakest in the line-up. The 25 in particular is said to be tricky to focus. The 35, on the other hand, should be a snap to focus. Nice to know someone loves the 25, though.

You're right of course, ~37.5mm.
3 best Zeiss lenses overall are 21, 35 f2 and 100MP, no question about it.
But on a crop camera 25 is actually really good and has the Zeiss look, 18 doesn't.
I think it's a waste to buy Zeiss 21 and use it on a Pentax. The same about Zeiss 35 f2
They both shine on a full frame camera.
25 fits the crop camera really well. And it is good, that's all

Agree with you on the 21, it's tempting but it does seem a waste on a crop. Plus, my beloved DA15 is really the only wide I need. 35 is the value champ and I would have bought it, but the 28 was calling my name and I don't regret it. The 100 gives me goosebumps every time I use it. The 50/2 is virtually identical in IQ to the 100, just half the FL. Much better bokeh and colors than the 50/1.4, IMO. I'm still really satisfied with my Zeiss choices and wouldn't swap any of them.
