Sigma 17-50mm: 17mm @ f2.8 examples, anyone?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy an extra standard zoom lens for my second body.
I do have a DA* 16-50mm for several years now, a great lens, except for its performance at 16mm @ f2.8.
At f2.8 the corners suddenly become very soft. Stopped down 1 stop, it looks like a different thing...

I've read very strong reviews of the Sigma but I have not seen any examples at 17mm wide open.
Is there anybody with some testshot (wall / newspaper / test chart) that shows what this lens can do?

Thanks, Bert

PM Tommot1965, he has had one for a while and seemed very pleased with it. It does sound like a worthwhile alternative.

Bert - are you looking for testshots taken with a Pentax body? If not, here's a "mixed bag" of sample pictures with this lens on a Canon 50D. At least two are at 17mm. f2.8.

Bert, the Sigma 17-50 2.8 is an awesome lens, no doubt. It only has one weakness really, wide open, in the corners. At 17mm, f 2.8, it is hurting in the extreme corners, but still better than the Da. Everywhere else it smokes the Da. Are you concerns only at this focal length and aperture? If so, the Tamron 17-50mm f 2.8 is less expensive and actually beats the Sigma @ 17mm wide open. I owned the Tamron for 3 years, just sold it recently--it is a great lens.

What did you replace it with?

Shiner, I have been selling off my Pentax gear, little by little. I have not replaced the Tamron, mainly because I might be moving to another system. However, I still own the Tamron SP 24-135, The Tamron 28-75 2.8, the Sigma 10-20--as well as several primes in the 17-50 range.

With my new system, I will probably buy a new Tamron 17-50 2.8.

Thanks, but yes I did see this review and it has been the main reason to consider this lens.
It is just that I have never seen any good examples taken at 17mm @ f2.8 with this lens to judges its corners sharpness.

Hum, it sounds like my DA* 16-50mm... how do you know that is still better?
Any reference material I could check?

Cheers, Bert

Bert:

Your post is confusing--not sure what you are saying, except the part about reference material. I do not have the time to search for you--just Goolge away--Photozone is a good place to start--Good luck.
