Help me please ... lens sort out

Ok, I REALLY need to sort out my lenses to something more manageable. Have listed what I have and need to trim back to maybe 4 or 5 lenses as it is doing my head in trying to figure out what to take when I go for a walk and I usually end up not bothering.

Looks a bit bad when I list them like this .. hope the wife doesn't read the thread.

What 5 lenses would you keep?

Pentax DA 14mm f2.8
Pentax FA 28mm f2.8
Pentax DA 35mm f2.4
Pentax DA 35mm F2.8 Macro
Pentax FA 50mm f1.7
Pentax DA* 55mm f1.4
Pentax DA 70mm f2.4
Pentax D-FA 100mm f2.8 Macro
Pentax DA* 200mm f2.8
Pentax F* 300mm f4.5
Pentax A* 300mm f2.8
Pentax 1.4X-L 2X-L AF 1.7X teleconverters

Pentax DA* 16-50mm f2.8
Pentax DA 18-135mm
Pentax DA* 60-250mm f4

Vivitar 105mm f2.5 Macro

Sigma 24mm AF Miniwide II f2.8
Sigma 28mm F1.8 II Aspherical

Sigma 17-35mm DG EX
Sigma 12-24mm DG EX
Sigma 24-60mm DG EX
Sigma 50-150mm DG EX HSM
Sigma 70-200mm APO EX (MKI)
Sigma 100-300mm DG EX F4

Looks like you had a serious case of LBA.
If this were my lens inventory I would have trouble eliminating 4 or 5, not paring down to 4 or 5. Some seem to be more specialized and you wouldn't necessarily carry on a walk-about. Maybe start by eliminating those you haven't used in more than 18 months. Evaluate every year.
Best of luck. Just wish I had your problem.

Well, a first step to a lens reduction plan would be to get rid of whichever you like least among:

FA28, Sigma 24 and Sigma 28;
DA35, DA35 macro;
FA 50/1.7, DA55/1.4;
DFA 100 macro, Vivitar 105mm macro;
DA*16-50 and Sigma 24-60;
DA*60-250 and Sigma 100-300;
and the teleconverters.

On the other hand, if you just want a single good walk around lens that is your "go-to" for walks, you need to determine what you value on those walks. Small size? Ability to shoot close-up? IQ? I often use either a DA35, F35-70, or FA43 for that role.

It's a nice problem to have, until your wife reads the thread... :-)

Keep these

Pentax DA 14mm f2.8
Pentax DA 35mm F2.8 Macro
Sigma 24-60mm DG EX
Pentax DA* 60-250mm f4
Pentax F* 300mm f4.5 (& appropriate TCs)

Send the rest to me.

I have spoken.

I dont know about 5, but here are some that I would let go in your line up (* is a let it go):

Pentax DA 14mm f2.8
* Pentax FA 28mm f2.8 (I'm going to vote for the Sigma here for wider aperture)
* Pentax DA 35mm f2.4
Pentax DA 35mm F2.8 Macro
* Pentax FA 50mm f1.7
Pentax DA* 55mm f1.4
Pentax DA 70mm f2.4
Pentax D-FA 100mm f2.8 Macro
* Pentax DA* 200mm f2.8 (If you keep the sigma 70-200, I think you could let this go)

* Pentax F* 300mm f4.5
Pentax A* 300mm f2.8
Pentax 1.4X-L 2X-L AF 1.7X teleconverters (I want your 1.4X-l)

Pentax DA* 16-50mm f2.8
* Pentax DA 18-135mm
Pentax DA* 60-250mm f4 (If the 100-300 is working for you, and the WR isn't as important, maybe let this go)

* Vivitar 105mm f2.5 Macro

* Sigma 24mm AF Miniwide II f2.8
Sigma 28mm F1.8 II Aspherical

* Sigma 17-35mm DG EX
Sigma 12-24mm DG EX
* Sigma 24-60mm DG EX

* Sigma 50-150mm DG EX HSM
Sigma 70-200mm APO EX (MKI)

Sigma 100-300mm DG EX F4
Sigma 50-500mm DG EX Bigma
Sigma DG EX 1.4x & 2X Teleconverters

That doesn't prune you to 5, but it definitely takes some duplication out of your line up.

Sigma 70-200mm APO EX (MKI)
Sigma 100-300mm DG EX F4
Pentax D-FA 100mm f2.8 Macro

(I'm not going to count the TCs as lenses) Sigma DG EX 1.4x & 2X Teleconverters

Hi,you think YOU have a problem? after 50 yrs of photography & collecting I recently did an inventory of my main equipment. 163 lenses, 47 bodies(film and digital) numerous types of bellows and ancillary equip for Macro. Oh and I forgot my19 enlarger lenses. Various meters,flash, spot & incidence.Honeywell Repronar for copying slides,negs to digital also Bowens illumitron for same.11 flash guns,3 studio flash units + softboxes ,diffusers,beauty dish.5 ringflashes and boxes of odds and sods that I have used over the years,did the inventory for insurance purposes was surprised at evaluation...Over $140,000, even so this was not as expensive as either of my ex wives.Just turned 71 and will have to get rid of a few things and let someone else enjoy them,all my equipment is kept in immaculate condition.

Cheers for the suggestions, realised I forgot the 11-17mm fisheye and DA 55-300mm

Hmmm, very close to my thoughts actually although I am thinking keep the Vivitar macro instead of the D-FA as I really love that lens and I would also keep it to a 6 lens lineup with the A* 300mm f2.8 and teleconverters as they are a superb combo.

All I can say is that I'm glad I realised before I got anywhere near 71

This is a fun exercise! If you're not the one who actually has to let these go

I would have a hard time choosing without further info. My Qs:

Do you travel a lot? And is that a major subject of your photography?

Do you take a lot of portraits? Are you a landscape guy (especially local, where you're going out shooting in your car)?

Do you shoot sports?

I ask these, because I've spent my lens kit "rearranging" time trying to get a very specific fit for what I do (travel photography, "strobist" portrait photography, landscapes, and occasional horse photography).

Tough Question

Cutting down to 4 or 5 seems too drastic. I agree with the others that suggest paring 4 - 5 from list. Based on my experience, I'ld suggest letting go of the:

Vivitar 105mm f2.5 Macro
Pentax FA 28mm f2.8
Pentax DA 35mm f2.4
Pentax FA 50mm f1.7
Pentax A* 300mm f2.8
Sigma 24-60mm DG EX

Good Luck!

Ok, then I'd add back in the A* 300/2.8 and I'd keep the fisheye.

That takes your kit to 7 lenses.

Still I think that's ragingly drastic; unless you have some cause for doing so.

When I look at the list I would divide it into at least two groups

I think the sigma zooms 12-24, 24-60 and 70-200 especially since it is version 1 which is the sharpest would make a very good all round arrangement. I would also keep the 1.4x and2x sigma TCs since you can use them on the 70-200 and the 300F2.8 which I would also keep

Of the primes the 100 macro for sure and probably all the pentax primes below 100mm

Based upon my experience with the sigma 70-200 I am not sure any 200mm prime would offer much more

I know this is more than 5 lenses but I believe with the three sigma zooms plus the 300F2.8 and all the TCs you can cover any length well. The short primes you might take in place of the two shorter sigma zooms as you wish. I would not take it all out at once however

Yikes!

I'll try my best (very subjective obviously).

12-24mm (Ultra Wide)

16-50 * (Wide/Normal)

55 * (Portrait)

100 (macro)

60-250 * (Tele/Sports)

Hello Mike,

check the edited quote.

I'm only able to narrow it down to 8 lenses and 4 TCs. the first ones, including the intangibles were hard enough to let but it's a must. although I was able to eliminate them basing on focal length repetition, capability, rendering, etc...

here are some other considerations if you wish to trim it down further more. are the TC's still of necessary use for you? if Yes, then keep those that I mentioned. if not, then get rid of them. the other part of the dilemma is the Bigma. do you still need the wider end and longer end of that lens? if yes, then keep.
