Lens for Pentax K100D

I have a Pentax K100D... that I use with a old vivitar 70-200mm lens I had with my Pentax Me-super... I'm mostly took picture of action sports (auto racing)... however, with the lens, I'm always on manual mode (auto focus don't work with the 70-200mm lens).

I was looking to upgrade for a K-r or K-x, however, I decided instead of keepiong it and to buy a new lens... 55-200 or 300mm...

Someone has any suggestion ? sigma, Pentax, tamron,...

I've never tried one but the DA 55-300 is well spoken of around here. Note however, you're still going to be fighting with slow AF on your K100d. The only similar lens I have any experience with is the Tamron Di LD 70-300. For me, it was quite a capable lens but I never did any motorsport shooting with it.

All that said, you might want to look into a K-x or K-r kit that comes with the 55-300 (if that's the platform you prefer).

I would get the 55-300 for sports in good light.

On the other hand, I wonder if the difference between a new one and my old Vivitar will be big ? Right now, I'm shooting every time in manual mode...

I'm sure, pictures will improve, even if I keep shooting in manual mode with a new one.

It depends on which vivitar you have. Some of them are doorstops and some of them are great performers. Even across the same focal lengths, that is, 70-200. Three things an update will buy you are auto focus and modern design (with the coatings and the like) and of course, the extra reach.

If its the Vivitar Series1 70-200mm that you have, thats a very highly regarded lens. With auto racing you could use trap focus quite effectively as the cars follow preset routes. If you are doing good with manual focus, I'd just stick with what you have and refine technique. I doubt that the K100D's autofocus will be fast enough for action photography. Most AF lenses wont have the fine manual focusing ability of your 70-100. Some here have used split prism focusing screens to improve the manual focusing ability, you might try the same.

Every thread about the 50-xxx budget zooms (Sigma, Tamron, Pentax) ends with - "get the Pentax 55-300". Really. It's the best bang/buck for $350 or under. Next step up is twice that.

Quite sure that that's a filter and not the lens

I have the 50-200 and the 55-300, both are great lenses, I really did not notice a great difference in quality. I shot some photographs with the K100D using the 50-200 and DA 16-45 which is a fantastic lens for one not being a limited or star. You can see images with all these lenses at the PPG Some taken with a K20D and K5, but most taken with a K100D. I destroyed the 50-200 on the Grand Canyon rafting trip which is why I bout the 55-300 just to get a bit more range. Here is a link to the PPG. PENTAX Photo Gallery
