50 mm / 1.2 Ashai (sp?) Pentax lens

My local shop has two of these going for $40 each. Fully manual and I have no clue if they'll even fit my K10D mount.

Are these good lenses? I seem to recall the buzz was about the 50mm/1.4 units.

Are the 50mm/1.2 lenses worth the $40?

Just looking for a cheap, reliable, close-up/portrait lens to harass my dogs with.

I would check to make sure they are not just the regular F2.0 some get confused (me included) with an F1.2 and an a F2.0 being described as F 1:1 2 . Or something along those lines someone will correct me I hope. But you can get the 50MM A-F 2.0 pretty cheap on ebay the same I think for the M version (again someone will help here )

Oh and I think the A-50mm F1.2 is in the several hundred dollar range. So I have to bet this is a F/2. which is decent lens that came with the K1000. I have one and before LBA set in this was my fastest lens for low light.

As vievetrick allready explained: if they are f/1.2 lenses just grab them, keep one and sell the other.

Asahi? Are they screw mounts? In any case they are probably "50/2" (which also can be written (50mm 1:2 which many conveniantly writes as 1.2...).

If they are f/2 lenses I would stay away and find myself a 5071.7 or 50/1.4 instead. Why buy a f/2 lens that isn't anything good unless stopped down to f/4 or even f/5.6? Well, exact focusing at f/2 and then stopping down can work but I don't see the point really when there are much better options.

50mm 1.4

Pentax made a screwmount in 50mm 1.4 Super Takumar, it makes a fantastic pportrait lens on my DL. You have to use an adapter with the bayonet mounts on current Pentax cameras. If its clean, $40 sounds like a fair price.

I have the 50mm, and 2 55mm's all are really nice on the digital body. All manual focus.

I shot available light pics of my kids in a church program with nothing but candles for light yesterday - got some good sharp shots . . . .

Thnaks folks - I'll head back over today to look at them again.

The lenses themselves have 500mm/1.2 stamped on them - in the metal ring around the front (surrounding the glass), so I'm thinking they are, in fact, 1.2 lenses.

But, I shall endevour to double and triple check as clearly one has value, the other, not so much.

No idea if they'll fit my K10D, but we'll find out - and go from there.

Thanks all.

WOW! If it's a 500mm f/1.2, I'd snap it up!

Seriously, a 50mm f/1.2 is about the fastest lens you can get for the K-mount.

Canon makes a 50mm f/1.0, and there have been a few lenses faster than that, but I'd say a 1.2 is pretty darn fast.

Oh, Canon just came out with an Auto-focus 50mm f/1.2 which sells for about $1300. So a MF f/1.2 lens for $40 is a pretty good deal!

I got a 50mm M F1:2 on ebay for $26 Australian, pretty happy with it though. Would have preferred a F1:1.7 or F1:1.4 but they are getting hard to come by in Oz and the prices asked for them get up pretty high.

The only time I saw a 50mm M F1:1.2 on ebay it was already at $300 australian with 3 days to go on bidding. So if those lenses are F1:1.2 grab them quick sell them both and get yourself a 77mmLtd - that's what I would do anyway.

I use an Asahi SMC Pentax-M 1:2 50mm (it's K Mount), which is a f/2 lense. I always thought 1:2 was the magnification... Anyway, it's a nice lens and I like to use it with for portraiture. Downside is Manual focus but only becuase I sometimes end up OOF. Watch for the focus indicator and I'm generally good.

Also, Asahi was Pentax's name (I think) years ago and they sorta phased it out. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought they used Asahi cuz Pentax was already taken at the time?

I went by the shop - turns out I was wrong and ya'll were bang on the money.

The lenses I first thought were 50mm/1.2 units were in fact 50mm/1:2 units.

Damn extra dot...LOL

So much for finding good glass for 40 bucks.

Then I started looking at tripods - there goes $300 for a pod and head...

...or the entry Pentax flash - again, 3 bills.

How's about the 75-300 zoomer in silver? $199, so that's much cheaper than the other gear...

Not sure what to buy next - might just take some classes...

A little Pentax history lesson. Asahi Optical Co. was the original name for Pentax. They designed and marketed the first SLR with a Pentaprisim. Hence the cameras name Pentax. In the mid 70's Asahi change the company name to Pentax after the camera.

The only 50mm f1.2 lenses they have made are the K50 f1.2 and the A50 f1.2. As far as I can tell, there has never been a M42 50 f1.2.

I'm straining my memory here, but I think the original K mount cameras and lenses were marketed as Asahi, but changed over to Pentax pretty quickly.

If these are K50 f1.2 lenses, and are in good shape, then $40.00 is an incredible bargain. Buy both, keep one and ebay the other. It can be worth US$300-400

Hi there, I picked up a Pentax Ashai SMC 50 f1.2, serial number 1430235, for US$20.00 in a small camera shop. Its brand new, never used, in perfect condition, however the rear lens cap was missing- stolen by a previous customer. I use pentax 645 and don't even have a 35mm body. Want to find out its worth to sell it. Any ideas?
