I'm looking at picking up this lens (and have to find the adaptor as well). What would be a good price for this lens in near-new condition?

The seller is also looking to through in a Pro Multi Coated Auto Tele Converter 2x as well if both are bought for $250.

i've got one and it's nice and sharp thu out the range. perfectly acceptable at f4.
i don't think i'd pay more than $150usd for it delivered.
there's also the tak SMC and K and M models that are very good also. i keep mine as a light weight alternative to the 300/2.8. it's amazing at how much one stop difference in speed makes..

cheers,

Thanks for the response, is it worth the 250 with the teleconvertor? I'm not sure how much that would run for. I've never looked into those before, nor done anything with the M mount lenses (besides the stock lens with my fathers old Pentax SLR.)

I'm not sure about the screw mount version but there is a rather beat up SMC-300mm F4 K mount version for $350 in a store near me, The fact it is still there suggests $350 is overpriced for a K mount version in tough shape.

I have some great shots with my K mount version, and although I would love an F/2.8 the F4 lens is pretty good.

The converter only adds about ten or fifteen bucks. The lens is overpriced.

most 2x TCs are good for only one thing and that's when you break the glass out and use them as extension tubes. in other words about 95% of them are nothing but junk.

I got that lens a month ago from the original owner for $75.00
I should mention that he's a friend of mine, so he didn't charge full price.

It's a good lens and I really like it.

If you study up on them theres really 3 or 4 different models.
Those built after 71 or something like that have coated lenses, earlier models don't.
They also used 2 different sized front lens caps / filter sizes.

Did you ever buy this lens? The new camera shop I found today had one just like you described in near new condition with the hard case for $125. I was wondering if it was worth it.

If I'm not mistaken the Super Takumars are single coated, then came the Super-Multi-Coated Takumars, then the SMC Takumars.
Some Takumar links.

I just looked through my watched Ebay list and a Super Multi Coated Takumar 300/4 sold for $209.17 on Oct 6th.
SUPER MULTI COATED TAKUMAR 1:4/300MM LENS ASAHI pentax - (eBay item 220155103047 end time Oct-06-07 13:00:00 PDT)

I also think the Super Takumar 300/4 at $250 is to much but if I had one in hand for $125, I'd snap it up in a hurry if it was in great shape. If it was a Super Multi Coated or SMC Takumar for $125 I'd be waiting in the parking lot tomorrow morning waiting for him to open up.

I think that it's the model II, as described on one of the links that you showed. On the lens, it just says Takumar (not Super, or Super Multi Coated). So, i'm thinking that it's the non coated one with the non-removable, extending lens hood. But it's in *excellent* shape. Perfect. No scratches or dings. The glass is clean. Heck, even the lettering on the original lens cap isn't worn. It's a nice looking lens. But the question is, is it worth $125, seeing as how it's the manual, non-coated lens? And i'm wondering if, coupled with a good 2x converter, good I get good lunar shots with it? Hmmm....

I don't know about the Takumar version. But I have the K mount iteration of this lens and am very happy with it. It's only downside AFAIC is that there is no tripod mount on it. For a sample check out my entry in this week's photo challenge here on bridges. I've found it to be sharp even at f4.0.

A tripod mount would be nice, but the newer models are pretty light for it's size so my medium format tripod doesn't have any troubles holding it steady.
A cheep tripod would though.

They do mention a Removable tripod collar for the 2 latest models, I wonder if I can buy one somewhere.

There is currently one on KEH in "bargain" condition for $165. Of course, it is worth noting that their "bargain" is equivalent to "mint" on ebay...
