I'll try the tape trick, I like the idea.

The kit zoom is more of a budget decision at this point, it has the definite advantage of being free (since it came with the camera).

But yes, I agree that a 35mm prime is a more versatile lens for the APS-C format.

I have the DA L 35mm f/2.4 and it's actually a great lens. It's essentially a digital reworking of the FA 35mm f/2.0. And more than one person posting on these forums has demonstrated that the results one gets wide open are more like f/2.2 than f/2.4. And some FA 35 owners say that lens was more like an f/2.2 than an f/2.0. Either way, for $200, I don't see how anyone can complain. Many of us screamed for a lens like this and Pentax finally granted our wish. But it's also a fair request that Pentax should put out DA L lenses based on the FA 24 or 28, FA 50 and FA 85.

Now, I'm focusing on which prime to get first. I am overwhelmed by the choices of primes available. But since my budget is very limited right now, anything over $200 is out of the question. Sadly, there's just not a lot available at that price, at least not new lenses, from Pentax. So, my focus is on the DA 35/2.4 or one of the older manual focus A lenses, like the 50/1.7 already mentioned.
From someone who owns a 15mm Ltd, a 21mm Ltd, a 31mm Ltd, a 43mm Ltd, and a 70 Ltd, I can tell you straight out that I think the DA-L 35mm F2.4 is an outstanding performer and well worth every penny. Optically fantastic, light weight, fast AF, all in a very small/light package. Definitely a worthy successor to the standard primes of old. The person in this thread who "wasn't impressed with its performance" either had a bad copy (doubtful) or wasn't using it right.

Likely neglected to use a hood. I notice a lot of people make that mistake because the cheaper primes don't come with hoods in the box.

Other than the fact that Nikon has a 35mm lens for about the same price (here in the UK anyway) which is a stop faster, has a silent focusing motor and has a rubber seal on the lens mount to limit dust intake?

Are you referring to the 35mm F1.8G AF-S DX?
Here in the US it's $100 more than a DA-L 35mm F2.4 and weighs almost twice as much. From what I've read, it isn't terribly well-regarded. But that seems to be more subjective (the reviews are all over the place).

Or perhaps you mean the 35mm F2 D?
That one's even more expensive, and less available.

have a look around for a Pentax-F 50mm f/1.7 - autofocus, and sells fairly regularly in the marketplace for about $200. beautiful output....

I will keep an eye out. I'd prefer an AF lens and didn't realize those F 50's could be had for that price. Thanks!

Hmmm, thank you! I need to wait a bit before I can buy, but I'll definitely keep that in mind.
