Kiev MIR-26 45mm fell apart - need some help!

I have a Kiev MIR-26 45mm that I would like to use with a Pentacon Six to Pentax K tilt adapter. But, the lens arrived from the Ukraine looking a bit ragged and fell apart in my hands. After a few hours of surgery I have got it back together and looking 95%. My only issue is that the infinity stop is focusing past infinity. I can adjust it easily and am looking for some advice on how to dial in the infinite focus point. Also, should I leave a little room past infinity? I have read that some lens made from metal can have issues with temperature change moving the infinite focus point.

Thanks!

Sorry about your poor purchase experience, but glad things went back together!

Two approaches :
  1. Find a prominent vertical object (a large building?) a 1/2 mile or so distant
  2. Use the split-image focus aid in the viewfinder to dial in the lens

-- or --
  1. Mount lens to camera and camera to tripod
  2. Find a prominent object a 1/2 mile or so distant
  3. Remove the camera back and tape a piece of groundglass at the film plane
  4. Dial in the lens using the projected image on the groundglass

I don't think I need to elaborate on which method is easiest!
I used the first method to adjust my Zenitar 16/2.8 fisheye.

To add to what Steve said above: use a sharpie to mark the point on both the barrel and focusing ring when its at infinity.

Oh, and then be glad it is a big, simple lens with very clear parts. Like learning car repair on a 1970's pickup as opposed to a 2008 Mazda. Good luck!

Thanks for the great ideas!

Steve:

I like the first approach and will most likely use it once I have a K mount with a split-image focus (right now I only have that on my old Pentax screw mount). I took the lens out for a few quick shots today and found that the focus is a bit of a pain. But, it makes me slow down when shooting... could be a good thing

Panoguy:

Not too clear! It was nice that I found a cutaway drawings of this lens on the internet, because the “focus nut” part was jammed all the way down making it look like one with the assembly it sat on. Had to use a butter knife and rubber grip to get some leverage before they unscrewed.

Steve
That's amazing, I just tried this with my Samsung focusing screen and my Spotmatic.
