So, what's up with the availability of the DA* 300/4?

I'm interested in upgrading from my A* 300/4 to something with AF.

Since I'm wanting to move into the current century with my lenses, of course the DA* 300/4 come to mind.

However, everywhere I look, they are unavailable - not just out of stock, but unavailable.

What's up with that?

TIA

MMh in Germany it is no Problem to buy it, a Collected Ordering on a Local Dealer ordered 5 DA* 300 which have been delivered to the dealer on a very short notice, so i dont think that there is any "real" problem with that.

Maybe Pentax discontinued the lens without telling any of us.

I have been looking for some time as well, and there are none around. Not even on Ebay. Two weeks ago Pentax US told me 12 days, but they still do not have any.

Mmh maybe they do have some problems with flooded storage areas or elevated radiation, so dont be so hard on them.

Shortages in expensive lenses are not at all unusual. Since Pentax must retool their assembly lines for each lens, they can only make so many at a time. Then what is made is divided up between the various world markets. All this is done on the basis of expected demand — in other words, by guessing. Pentax tends to be kind of conservative about this. With the bad economy, they've played it safe and underestimated the amount of demand for DA* 300s in America, and now they're running out of stock in America. Hopefully, they've done a batch very recently or can redirect some overstocks from elsewhere in the world. The fact that the DA* 300 is out of stock is good in these sense that it shows people our buying the lens and are interested in Pentax telephoto glass. Maybe that will prompt Pentax to introduce a new supertelephoto lens.

This problem of lens shortages is not confined to Pentax alone. There's been a shortage of Nikon supertelephotos in the American market for several years now.

I wonder how many weeks it going to take to get one,

DA* 300mm f4.0 ED(IF) SDM Lens
Order Date: 29/04/2011
Order Status: Out of Stock On Order

webstores should inform their customers
what item is out of stock before taking payment...

oh yeah, thats less customers if they did that huh.

I preordered one from Adorama, and it took a little over a month. B&H got some the same time, but were 250.00 more than Adorama. Preorder it, and when it arrives, you will see it. Adorama did not charge my card, until they shipped the lens. This was a month ago.

Doh! Boy is my face red. I've only seen it referred to as "the market" before.

No worries, dude. Abbreviated jargon gets confusing really easily.

Such marketplace forums are also often referred to as B&S or B/S/T forums.
