Seems like your the ginea pig

A brief search seems to imply that the Vivtar is pretty good up till 500mm where it's a bit soft.
Not much on this lens though, this might help:

I have a chance to pick one up and was wondering what you thought of this lens. How is the IQ?

I recently picked up on the 'bay a Vivitar 500mm f/6.3, preset M42 -- it's old, it's huuuuge, and it's really heavy (standard refractor, not a mirror lens), and it's really difficult to focus.

It's comical looking with the hood attached. It really dwarfs the K20D. I paid about $6 or 7 per pound for the thing, so even if it's a crummy lens, it was a decent enough deal, and I can use it to bludgeon intruders.

I'll post some pictures when I have a chance to get some together. It would be interesting to compare them to the 100-500mm.

as the Brittish say...Quite! but not as large as the vivitar 500mm f6.3. Would like opinions on the best manual 500mm (non mirror) lens for under $1K.

Oh, I will. I haven't taken enough pictures to formulate an opinion yet. And I need to grab my wife's P&S to take a picture of the entire rig to put on the review page.

Here's a follow up on an old thread. I'll be posting a review when I've had more time to analyze the lens.

As for it being soft at 500mm - I think not. What folks are more likely seeing is motion blur or loss of contrast at larger apertures. Here's a sample that I took only last night at 500mm, f/10, and 1/250 or so shutter speed. I adjusted for some motion blur (hand held shot leaning against the house, sorry), and dropped the highlights to suit my own taste. Still don't think I got the motion blur fix right, but anyway:

The big problem I had with the lens was zoom creep. It's just so darn heavy the lens slowly collapses when you point it up. The original fresh from the factory lens didn't have this problem as the damping starts out quite firm. Unfortunately, users get impatient and tend to shove the zoom back & forth too quickly thus ruining the damping. I wonder if it can be adjusted or refreshed...?

Like - good sharp lens, classic Vivitar Ser 1 performance.

Dislike - Zoom creep, very long physically at 500mm. Old folks has focusing issues with f5.6-8 range

Replaced with Tokina 80-400 Version 2 for AF needs
