500mm zoom for K10D

Hi all.

I've stuck with my old K10D through several model updates and have been shooting Australian Rules football with the kit lens FAJ 75-300mm.

Now for those who live overseas, Australian Rules is played on a pretty big field, substantially larger than American football and oval shaped.

So i've been looking around at better lens options. Obviously i'd prefer a faster aperture, but i'd also like a longer focal length. There is no way i could afford a big 400 prime, so the two options that jump out are the sigma zooms.

Are there any differences between the 50-500 and 150-500 lenses other than the bottom end magnification? How does the HSM go on these lenses with a K10D (not the quickest focussing camera that's for sure). are there any major foibles of either lens other than the average f6.5 at 500mm? I know that in dull lighting it will be worse than my 300 when zoomed right out to 500.

Are there any other options i could look at? I haven't kept up to date with lens releases in the last few years. there are times in this sport where 300mm is not enough, although with a razor sharp lens I guess i could probably crop in close.

You might find our review of the bigma helpful:

The main difference between the two is that the minimum focusing distance is drastically smaller with the 50-500mm (due to a new optical design).

This comparison may help. Surprisingly, the 50-500 appears to be sharper at the long end than the other Sigma zooms.

Cropping from a faster 300 could be a better idea. It should be easier to get sharp photos from a fast 300mm than from a slower 500mm.

Can't say the HSM focuses faster than Pentax screw-drive, but it is silent. It takes some getting used after "listening" to Pentax lenses. Never had the 50-500 but I'm pretty happy with the 150-500.

yeah, i was thinking that. especially with the "old" K10. updating to a K-5 probably opens up some more possibilities, but the dollars are limited and both a lens and new body just isn't an option. unfortunately.
