I have 2 vivitar lenses, and am pleased with both.

My first vivitar is the 70-210- f/3.5 Series 1 (first version). I find it very good at all focal lenghts. The only poroblem is that there is a slight lens modification required, to reduce the size of the apature activating lever shield, so it will fit on the DSLRs.

My other vivitar is a 400mm F/5.6. The only complaint I have with this lens is the minimum focusing distance of 22 feet.

I like to shoot birds, and I can often get closer than this lens will focus. It is good, however, for bigger game at a distance.

I have 2 Vivitar lenses and they are both really nice IMHO. One is a 75-205 f3.8 zoom that I bought new in 1981. It's scary how sharp it is (really sharp). The only real problem with this lens on my k100d is you have to use stop down metering. The other is a Series 1 105mm f2.5 Macro, which is also really a sharp lens.

I have 1 vivitar, and love it.

I'd buy a few more if I could get them through my local store.

I believe that they still make cameras, but I don't see any SLR lenses on their web site

Vivitar 75-205

Love the Vivitar brand! =P

Try to stick to Vivitar lenses manufactured by Kiron, Tokina and Komine.

Depends on which you get.

The 105mm macro is spectacular, while the 400mm "auto telephoto" I have has terrible CA.

Vivitar was made by a few different companies.
The ones made by Kiron (like the 105mm macro) are generally very good. The later ones made by Cosina are not that good, so I've heard.

The lenses labeled "Series 1" are generally good quality.

Any thoughts on a Viv 200mm F3.5? A hair faster than the SMC PK 200mm F4. What about optical quality?

the viv 200/3.5 in screw mount is a very good lens. it's also good in K mount. i've had 5 and someone that got one from me said he thought that it was a little soft wide open. it was a K mount. i went back thru pix i have of both and saw that for some reason the K mount is a little softer wide open. why this is i have no clue as both use the same lens formula and both are built by komine. belive me that you'd be happy with either..

I have the VIV S1 105mm Macro and the VIV S1 70-210mm [Version 3] and I love them both. I use them mainly for macro work though. They are sharp as a tack. I got mine from eBay, just got lucky I guess.

Here's a page detailing the Series 1 70-210 lenses. Before you buy a Series 1 70-210 you should view this page.
Vivitar 70-210 Series 1 Macro Zooms - Mark Roberts Photography
I have a Series 1 105/2.5 which is an incredible lens. It's the same lens as this, just dressed up in it's Vivitar garb.
Kiron 105mm f/2.8 - Macro 1:1 - Kiron 105 Macro
I got a Vivitar 28/2.8 after seeing some of Little Laker's pictures and it's very nice also.
