Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 on the K5?

I need a fast lens in this range, and have read that the Tamron beats the Sigma somewhat in IQ......some reports say considerably? The problem is that the Tamron appears to be very slow to AF, but nothing is slower than my Bigma 50-500, and on the K5 it is not very noticeably faster...by a wide margin.

Has anyone used the Tammy 70-200 on a K5? What is your result? Better? Considerably?

Best Regards!
Rupert

Can't say with the K-5, but my 70-200 on the K20D is about as fast/slow as any other lens I have. The IQ is great, but people say that about the Sigma as well...

I read different things, but the majority say the Tammy is better at IQ. If the AF speed is better on the K5, it is a little cheaper, and that wouldn't hurt my budget!
Best Regards!

Please read the in-depth review in this forum:
Fast Sports Zoom Lenses for Pentax | Sigma 70-200mm vs. Tamron 70-200mm vs. Pentax FA* 80-200mm F2.8

It is directly pertinent to your query. The results are very, very close between all three lenses.

Another pertient lens is the Pentax SMC DA* 60-250mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM :

Highly Recommended lens by www.Photozone.de.

Rupert, I have the Tamron 70-200, and I gave it a go on the K-5 recently - its AF speed and accuracy is impressive. So have you tested the 70-200 yourself against the Bigma?

I have had the 70-200 on the K10D, K20D and now the K-5. In good lighting, there's little difference between the three, but that's not where most users have this lens... It's the poorer, stage-type lighting that this lens comes of its own above the consumer telezooms, and I can tell you, on the K-5 it is again surer and therefore swifter at locking focus compared with the K10D and K20D.

So the speed is not in the mere shifting of the focus ring from 0.95m to infinity - it's the ability of the K-5 to nail the focus with minimal hunting in such conditions that makes it faster.

The Tamron is definitely a better IQ lens than the Sigma IMO, but I'm basing that on 2 copies of each lens being 'tested' in practical terms at my own home, rather than on any scientific analyses or reviews. Indeed there are numerous reviews and user accounts that claim the Sigma is just as good as the Tamron. I beg to differ: See Sigma 70-200mm HSM personal IQ test - PentaxForums.com and Request for images from Tamron 70-200 at f/2.8 - PentaxForums.com

Check out our review: Fast Sports Zoom Lenses for Pentax | Sigma 70-200mm vs. Tamron 70-200mm vs. Pentax FA* 80-200mm F2.8

The IQ is comparable- its handling is where it's a bit lacking, but you should expect to get the same great images from both.

The IQ of Tamron 70-200/2.8 is fantastic. It performs significantly better wide open than the older Sigma 70-200/2.8 lenses. I've never tried the newest Sigma 70-200/2.8 (the one that was reviewed in the comparison between the Tamron, Sigma and FA*), so I can't speak for how it compares directly. The DA*60-250 is also a great lens with a fantastic range, albeit a stop slower.

That said, I recently sold both my Tamron and DA*60-250 to fund the FA*80-200. Was it worth giving up both lens for the FA*? Not sure yet to be honest. The FA* is a great lens, but the Tamron and DA* lenses were pretty damn good too.

Regarding the AF of the Tamron; it is a bit on the slow side. But for with the exception of quick moving targets, it was never really a huge issue for me. I guess it depends what your needs and expectations are in terms of AF speed.

One observation of the Tamron is that it sucks in dust pretty easily and subjectively, the build quality is a little lower than the Sigma. The Sigma wins AF wise - faster and quieter.

I owned both the Sigma (version II) and the Tamron, and the Tamron was significantly sharper at f/2.8 @ 150-200mm. Might be sample variation, but I was definitely more impressed with my Tamron, optically.

Thanks all for the information....the review was also very helpful. I will think on this a few more days, but currently I am leaning toward the Tamron.......I don't see twice the benefit in the Sigma...just twice the price, although I do find my Sigma 17-70 HSM OS to be a terrific lens and love the HSM.
Best Regards...Thanks again!

The older Sigma HSM II is a terrific lens. I had both the Tamron 70-200mm and the Sigma 70-200mm HSM II. The Tamron wins wide open but stopped down a little (f3.2, f3.5) the Sigma gets already really sharp (my copy does, no guarantuee another one does too).

I found the handling of the Sigma better and the silence of the HSM-motor also won me over to choose the Sigma over the Tamron. The Sigma also has quick shift, the Tamron doesn't have that option.

theres a lot bunch thread in forum tell about the difference between sigma and tamron.
i just try to make little bit conclusion , because i think, i will get one of them too..

sigma : heavier (bout 60 gr) but smaller .
it has SDM motor and focusing faster in Body that support HSM (K100Ds above)
but it has middle Image quality in long throw zoom ( 150-200)

Tamron : lighter then sigma but bigger body size.
doesn't have SDM motors so the Autofocus speed is little bit slow then sigma ( logic isnt ?? )
Tamron has great Image quality in longzoom (150-200)

which is match for me , because i plan to combine with 1,5 X converter so i can get 300/f4 in long throw zoom .

remind me that DA 300/f4 is still unreachable for me... ( (

this is my opinion so hopefully you can make a better decision ..so did i :| :| :|

if i miss something or someone have a better opinion ..please correct my answer... im looking forward for another perception

thanks

I recently tested the new sigma back to back with the bigma and the 120-400 sigma...the new sigma 70-200 had them both beat,,,the tamron takes some very well contrasted sharp images...so thats huge plus for it even though it dont have HSM..I only used one for a hour or two...

....... Ive just gone mad and bought a nikon 70-200 VRII...thats quite something..

bigma 50% crop to retain the same FOV at F 6.3 !

sigma 70-200 OS 100% crop at F4...F2.8 isn't as sharp

Nikon 70-200 VR II at F2.8

the Sigma OS at 100% crop F2.8 with PP sharpening..the forum is also not showing these crops as good as the PC....they are much softer here than in PS

That Nikon version certainly scrub up well in this series - as it should for what you would have paid for it.
