Best pentax wide angle?

Picking up the k10d on Monday (upgrading from *istDL and canon rebel xti before that), was hoping to pick up a good wide angle lens as that is my preferred shooting style. At first I was looking at the 10-17, but it says it's a fisheye, so I've been looking at the 12-24, and it looks really good but I thought I'd get some input. I want as wide as possible with good image quality under 1000 bucks USD. It doesn't have to be pentax brand.

Thanks guys!

On this site you will find a good overview and good reviews of lots of Pentax-lenses.
The wide-angle Pentax lenses are also reviewed.

Good luck !

Re: 12-24

I choose the 12-24 and like the lens a lot.
It's rectalinear, not fisheye.
Has some strange distortion around the centre though:

See this album with images from my first outing with the lens, carrying only the 12-24.
Should give a reasonable impression of what it's capable of.

Is this a joke with the window? Or what do you mean?

Less than $1000? How about a DA 14 and a DA 21? I have (and love) the 21, and the 14 is the next big lens investment I'm going to make.

Thanks so far guys, it's still looking like the best option to me.

And Finn, that combo looks nice but 14 mm isn't quite wide enough for me. Thanks though!

In that case, sigma 10-20

Ive got one and it practically lives on my 20D.

Still want me to answer your question?

I prefer the 10-17 but the 12-24 is good for interiors, or if you have to have straight lines.

Here's a recent comparison I did to satisfy my own curiosity about angle of coverage:

I absolutely love the DA 12-24. It's especially handy for skys when you have a flat horizon (plains and water) and for architecture shots (inside and out).

I have a few photos taken with it on my flickr site:

I like my DA14. Very good lens and has very close focusing distance too!

You won't be dissapointed by the 12-24, and beyond the wider aperture, you wouldn't gain anything going with the 14 prime. You can look at the sigmas etc, but I've heard the Pentax is the better glass in this range (at a price of course).

I'll leave a link to some of my 12-24 shots for you in case you'd like more examples.

If you want as wide as possible pick the DA 10-17 Fisheye. I have some sample photos here:

If you want as wide as possible rectilinear then pick the Sigma 10-20mm. I have some sample photos here:

Best of luck to you.

I have the 10-17 but I dont think of it as a replacement for the 12-24, it is a specialty lens afterall, it is a fisheye. The real choices IMO are the Sig 10-20 or the aforementioned Pentax 12-24. I use the FE for fun shots at like car shows, ballparks, B&W and some macros. It is not a daily driver IMO, unless you are into that sorta thing.

I can recommend the Sigma 10-20, I'm sure the Pentax 12-24 is also great from what I have heard. But at least where I am it is way too expensive..
