What Pentax lens compares the best to the Canon 85mm f1.2L II?

I'm wondering what Pentax lens comes closest to the Canon 85mm f1.2L II in overall quality of the image (sharpness, bokeh, contrast.

Here's 3 candidates:
FA*85mm f1.4
FA 77mm f1.8 limited
Sigma 85mm f1.4

The first one is out of production but available on ebay regularly. The last one is brand new to Pentax mount so very few picture samples around. The 77mm is pretty legendry in Pentax land, but over a stop slower than the Canon.

We'll be posting an in-depth comparison of the FA* 85 and the Sigma 85 early week.

The FA* is personally my favorite lens, however- it produces amazing images and IMO has the ideal focal length. Call be crazy, but I've got two backup copies ready to go in case my current one fails

Here's a sample photo which shows the bokeh pretty well:

And sharpness wide-open (wish I had a larger resolution available):

you can say that 85 1.2 is one of a kind lol. i don't see any manufacture with an 85 f/1.2... pretty nice little lens IMO.

I agree.

Everyone who doesn't own Canon gear lust for it. It is truly a one of a kind lens. That and the Leica Noctilux 50mm f.95 are just heads and shoulder above practically everything else on the market.

Wow, TWO backup copies?!? I wont call you crazy, but that's nuts!

I've been looking to get something around that focal length for a while... just ordered the DA 70 - will be my first limited and I have a funny feeling it wont be the last!

Nice pics btw

Someone did a crude comparison test of the Canon 85/1.2 with the Pentax A* 85/1.4.

From what I've seen, the new Sigma produces images that are similar. 85L has it's own version of "pixie dust," but you definitely pay for it.

Thanks for the input guys. So I'm thinking the Sigma may be my best bet since the Pentax 85mm FA* is about $1250 on eBay.

I own the FA* 85/1.4, but also the very first version of the Canon 85mm f/1.2 S.S.C. Aspherical (so before the "L" designation came into play). Very sharp lens, but I haven't had time yet to test it fully. As its mount is a dead mount there's no DSLR out there which gives infinity.

It's very sharp though!

And a 100% crop of the above:

Any chance you could include the 77mm in that test as well?

The A*85/1.4 is, in many ways, the absolutely best lens that I own in the short tele range.
This puts it ahead of the 77 and 70 mm lenses for me.

it is such a pity. personally, I prefer it over the new 85/1.2. not because it's way cheaper but because of it's rendering. I think the only way to use an FD lens optimally on a Pentax camera is using an NX camera.
