Japan's Woes Affecting FA Ltds Already?

Just noticed last night that Adorama has raised prices pretty drastically in the last day or two on all the FA Ltds. $115 increase on the 77 (to $900), $150 on the 31 (to $1150, including a recent $35 increase at both N.Y. superstores), and a $165 increase (to $750) on the 43. All of these are in-cart prices.

Combine this with the fact that B&H is out-of-stock on both the 31 and the 43, and can't give any kind of ETA on when they'll be back, which they usually can do. B&H is, so far, holding the line on prices. Depending on what the situation actually is, they may deserve to be commended for that. Of course, they aren't really risking anything on lenses they can't sell anyway, but they do still show the 77 as in-stock as of this writing.

It would appear, though I obviously don't know for sure, that Adorama knows that these lenses may be in short supply for a while, and has raised their prices accordingly. They do, apparently, currently have them all in-stock.

Though the lenses are all made in Vietnam now, components are coming from Japan. The damage to Pentax's Japanese facility was reportedly fairly minimal, but if they have reduced production capacity due to power shortages, etc., how high of a priority are the FA Ltds? Once things are back to normal, and that may be a while, will prices and availability return to normal, or could this be a catalyst for a permanent change? I'm floating these questions out there because I don't know the answers.

Another theory is that the current inventory has been sold out more quickly than normal, in part because there is speculation about how the earthquake might affect supply. People who were thinking about buying one might have just gone ahead and done it "just in case". Since even large places like B&H and Adorama only carry a certain number in stock at any given time, this mini-run on them might have cause the apparent shortage. The fact the price went up might just reflect the uncertainty that retailers have about how soon them might get them back and at what price.

the price rise might also be the drop in value of the American dollar. these prices sound like the prices we see in Canada

Good point. Probably should have thought of that since it was just this morning that I checked paypal to see how many US dollars it would take for me to send someone $785 Canadian dollars. The answer, $839 USD.

It's killing our export industry and hurting tourism as well (i work as a purchaser for a hotel, so i get benefits and drawbacks due to it cheaper to buy supplies but less people to use them)

Smart smart smart.

I would not be surprised if both factors are involved. No doubt that all Japanese optics companies have been troubled by this tragic event.

If you want an FA ltd... either take a chance or buy RIGHT NOW. I think the prices will fall eventually..

I'm glad I bought my 77 a few weeks ago, yikes. Disappointing that the 43 has also gone up -- that was on my radar but at $750, thanks but no thanks.

Yes, at some point you just don't need it that badly, LBA notwithstanding.

BTW Aden Camera in Toronto is 679 on the 43, 789 on the 77 and 1180 on the 31
these have been the prices for quite some time now. last time i looked they had stock in store on at least the 31

bh photo when you add the 43 to cart is 584 999 on the 31 and 749 on the 77 so you still have better prices in the US than we do
the really annoying one for me is the 12-24 1080 here 699 at bh

Pentax Canada is completely hopeless

Yes, but they're out of the 31 and 43 with no idea when they might have them again.

Well, the law of diminishing returns was already in effect with these babies, it's just beginning to have a finer point on it. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), the 31 is the only lens that I still feel that I have to have. It's been invading my dreams, lately. I don't wanna get raped, though.

it does however help postpone LBA which is a good thing. by the time that everything finally settles in, we have a lot of BA to consider, not just LBA.
