The only time a serial number really makes any difference is in bank note collecting.
A note with all 111111111 would be worth more than a regular 765901264 s/n.

I'm assuming our mechanic seller does not know anything about bank notes either and is
just out to lunch.

Phil.

At first I was thinking the serial number might be a special sequence like
11235813
or 314159....
which some people would find valuable... but it seems to be just some random number, or one that I do not recognize.

Like all serial numbers, it is a one of a kind.
Someone is having a bit of fun trying to pimp their product.

Maybe he means it's not in the typical format of other pentax serials.

With guitars, serial numbers indicate different things about the guitar - plant made, year, month, week, sometimes even the luthier.

"Uncommon" serial numbers might start with an unknown letter sequence or could be longer or shorter. It could indicate that the guitar was part of a small batch of customs or one-offs that would typically be much, much more valuable than another guitar of the same model.

I don't know if there is sucha thing but if there were a pentax lens serial number registry, and this particular lens was not listed in it, it could indicate that the lens is indeed somewhat unique. Or that it's a fake.
