Presenting Another Great Moment in Ebay

Staff note: This post may contain affiliate links, which means Pentax Forums may earn a small commission if a visitor clicks through and makes a purchase. If you would like to support the forum directly, you may also make a donation here.

Who here does not love Ebay, not only for purchasing lenses (sometimes which even live up to expectations), but for the amusement value of some listings of people less, shall we say, in the know about these things. Here is a listing for an A28/2.8 (actually doing rather well at $82 at the moment), but it's no ordinary A28.

SMC Pentax-A 1:2.8 28mm Lens Very Rare Serial | eBay

That's right, this lens has a rare serial number. So rare that the seller could not find another of these lenses with this very same serial number on the internet. Dare we even imagine that this be the only A28 made with this serial number?

We researched this lens and it appears to be a very rare / uncommon serial number (we couldn't find a match).
Wow. Just wow.

For so many years staying with pentax gear. Can someone explain to me what is so special about this serial? Forget me if I can't understand a joke.

The seller claims that it is a "very rare serial number". Surely every serial number for every product type is extremely rare, as it's supposed to be a unique number??

Must be another difference between a car mechanic and a heavy duty mechanic...
Wonder if he thinks its like a part number? Well, I wonder who the poor sucker bidding over $82 is...

$82 isn't totally outrageous, though?

This site lists an average price of $80, but that includes a few bargains around $50
SMC Pentax-A 28mm F2.8 Reviews - Pentax Lens Reviews & Pentax Lens Database

The serial number bit is definitely a laugh.

If the lens is in shape the price does not seem too bad: it is an A lens, useful FL, kind of fast, and a decent (albeit not stellar) lens overall AFAIK. I suppose the sheer entertainment value of Ebay is worth something. I try to look it as akin to betting (on sports, say, soccer matches), which is a hobby in its own right; I suppose a key idea with both is that by knowing what you are doing the changes of coming ahead are much improved (or so you tell yourself) . (This sort of thing probably tickles some hunter-gatherer instinct ? )

I sold an M50/1.4 with the serial number 2100001 several years ago. I must be bad at marketing; I only made $1.49 on that auction.
