Pentax-a 1:4 70-200mm

Hi everyone. I'm asking for help from some of you guys that seemed to have tried every single Pentax lens ever made !

I have the opportunity to buy a Pentax-a 70-200mm 1:4. That is correct, it's not the 70-210 and it's also a constant f/4 as it is cleary written on the front of the lens.

Anyone has any experience with this lens ? I'm tempted to pick it up and give it a workout although I don't exactly need it.

Here a picture of the actual lens for sale :

I would appreciate anyone opinion on the performance of the lens what they think it might be worth.

Karl

The lens being a non-smc leads me to believe that it's a budget lens. Unless it's really cheap, don't I think it will be worth it. Then again I have not owned this lens, so maybe some owner may chime in.

Thanks for the quick reply ! I appreciate it. Hopefully someone that has tried it can tell us how it performs. I do agree though that Pentax-a lens should have SMC coating. Would it be written on the side of the lens if it did have SMC ?

I have that lens branded as a Takumar-A. My parents gave it to me so I still have it. It's not SMC. It's a little on the large/heavy side, solid construction, 58mm filter. The focus and zoom ring are loose enough so that you often see it mentioned in listings. That's the way my lens has been from new, almost light enough to be AF.

The image quality weak point is 200mm and f4 - you can't really use f4 past about 135mm. I think it's average at best. It's nice that it's got an A setting. Maybe $25? I'd look for the SMC Pentax-A 70-210mm f4.

Thanks Dave. I value your opinion as every time you describe a lens here on the forum (and in the marketplace), you always use facts and real life experience. Knowing that it is a rebranded Takumar-A 70-200mm, I think I will pass. I was hoping it would be as good as the 70-210mm. Maybe I'll get lucky next time!
Thanks everyone.

Don't buy that lens. Yes it's known as a "Takumar", which should be a reflection of its quality.....but it isn't.
The one to go for is the Pentax "A" 70/210, constanf F4...a brilliant zoom, and there are a few about.
Cheers, Pickles.
