I was hoping to see that this is not a highly unusual problem but apparently it is! I'm the first to report this issue - it may be batch related so others may now start to say that they've had the same problem - we'll see.
Anyway, the good news is that I bought it from Amazon and they have been fantastic in handling this problem. I could not have dealt with a better company. They have made a customer for lfe, which is what good custimer service is supposed to do.
I'll be looking to buy more camera equipment from them as time goes by.
