Hand-holdable???

I just bought one of these:

K 135-600/6.7

So... can anyone recommend a suitable tripod?

Tom did you mean the 135-600 f6.7 (the link was broken)? This is one of those lenses that might work best on a pro video tripod. I used to have a rock solid one from Silk that was for the 14 Lb Sony betacams we had. Only issue is they are not very much fun to carry around. I'm sure someone will have a better suggestion but to answer your title. Sure, if you are built like the Hulk.

Yep.

That's the one, Peter.

I fixed the link.

I'll only be using this lens from fixed locations (blinds) so weight won't be an issue.

Well Tom in that setting if you can find a used pro video tripod with panning head. It would be very solid for something this heavy and they are very smooth for panning. Might work well for wildlife shooting. It was years ago when I ran a small commercial video/photo company but we bought one at a local TV station that was clearing out surplus gear for around $200.

Tom,

I'm just curious here.

Is that f6.7 through the full Zoom range.
If so that's impressive

It looks like a nice lens.
I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures from it.

Look here for a tripod - it even has the right name on it! And you can get adpters for the screw thread.

I would look for a back brace first, you have to carry this beast too!

All jokes aside, I use 2 very old tripods, one is a vivitar professional 1321 which I have put a monfretto ball head onto. The other is a similar (but no name on it) tripod whth about 1 1/4 inch tubular aluminum legs (also now with monfretto head on it). The vivitar weighs about 12 pounds.

The only advise I have is to look into something that can not only support the lens, but maybe a 5-10 pound bag of rocks to stop the vibration. It will be noticeable.

You also might want to look into a secondary telephoto lens support, to lock the body to the tripod as there can be quite a bit of high frequency vibration that takes place at the tripod head.

Tom,

I'm cheap so went with a tripod from amvona.com. It's built like a tank and cost very little. As Peter suggested a video tripod might be a better answer. You might want to take a look at their tripods and bid for one. The bid price is usually less than 1/2 of their selling price.

Regards,

Ken
