Is there a teleconverter 1.5x or 1.7x that I can put on the 55-300mm lens and get full auto-focus?? If so where can I find one?

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I've tried the Tamron 1.4x with the 55-300 before and it actually works reasonably well, both in terms of IQ and AF. You need decent light, both for the AF and due to the stop loss from using the TC. Not sure if it's really any better than cropping in the end, but it does work.

They've been out of production for a little while now. They come up either in the marketplace here or on ebay every now and then. Occasionally you can find them as part of larger packages of lenses when someone is selling off an older kit; that's how I cam across a couple extras that I've sold in the marketplace. They tend to sell for about $160-175 on here, sometimes a little more on ebay.

The Promaster 1.7x TC works with the 55-300mm. I did an informal test and it seems to me to be more like a 1.5x or 1.6x rather than 1.7x. It needs good lighting (broad daylight) for the AF to work. IQ was ok.
