OP can buy roughly 10 18-55 for the budget and throw them away when they become unusable due to dust
If he already had an 18-55, it would be my advise to use that for the trip. But with no lens, a lens with a little more reach is benificial to get his feet wet.

which is why i think everyone initially recommended the 18-135 wr, and a fast 50
still the best travel kit imho

I have the 2 kit lenses 18-55 and 50-200 and a fast 50 A 501.7 manual focus. I started with a DL and now have a K-7.

I don't have a lot of use for the 50. It is a very tight focal length for anything but specialized shots for me so I don't recommend it as a general use for the K-7 but I tend to buck the trend here.

I have taken a few vacations with my DL and only the 18-55 kit. I NEVER felt like I needed more reach with that lens on vacation. In fact, I tended to shoot 18-21 most of the time. But it is a slow lens and gets sharper above 5.6.

I use my 50-200 for people shots at outdoor festivals and stuff at the zoo. I think it is fine for people shots but perhaps a bit more reach for the zoo would be better.

I recently bought the DAL 35 f2.4. Very pleased with it for the $183 I paid. Almost as sharp as my fast 50, pretty fast focus, occasional nice 3d look, and a step up from the kit lens for sure.

I toyed with the Tamron 17-50 2.8 because of the rave reviews but I want to get a tripod, another battery, bought Lightroom so I went with the prime.

If this is a first lens, I recommend reading up on the Tamron you should gain sharpness AND low light AND a bit of DOF ability from the kit lens. Then find a 50-300 kind of zoom. One that is sharp and has a bit of speed. There is a recent comparison of them in pro reviews here.

That is how I would approach it from scratch if I were starting again and had money for lenses.
