And I thought we had it bad in Canada... Pentax Lenses : Broadway Camera in Vancouver, Canada - Star, DSLR

It's really strange considering that the strength of CAD, like AUD, has also eclipsed USD and yet we're paying more than they do.

We pay more because of our various countries' taxes and import duties etc. If we buy FROM the US at their current prices, its cheaper than buying locally, and with the exchange rate as it is, we end up paying less than the list price if you look at it only in terms of numbers.

EG: The FA77 is now beyond what I am prepared to pay, but the DA70 is still in my ballpark. At $629.45 USD (incl the shipping I choose) will cost me ~$584 AUD depending on the exchange at the time and what my bank is doing. In one of the local cheaper outlets its $AU699 (I'm guessing Simon is looking at the same outlet). And then there's shipping because the only shopfronts are in capital cities.

This is why we keep buying offshore.

The camera&lens industry is in a terrible state economically, with record declines year on year. I suspect rises like this are also partially an attempt to make more from fewer customers.

The US Dollar has taken a pounding lately and there is no sign of improvement.

The only benefit I can see is that if you own lenses, the used market is booming amazingly well right now. You can buy a lens now and flip it in six months or a year, often for more than you paid for it originally. Not that I would "invest" in lenses, but you certainly can buy them feeling comfortable you can get your money out down the road if you need to.

Its not the way it used to be. Four or five years ago the market was lousy for used lenses from a seller's standpoint. You could pick them up very cheaply as higher end photographers left the brand for Nikon/Canon.

Indeed. So was the DA35macro... a bit longer ago but its price was way up there. Thats why I bought from B&H and haven't looked back.

I was waiting a few weeks to get a DA15 after my tax refund arrived. B&H got it in last week and is currently selling for $509 which is up $10 from where it was in late winter. I think some of the high prices are vendors taking advantage of supply interruptions due to the earthquake. It's springtime and Americans are getting refund checks in the mail so demand is up and supply is short. The B&H price increase is just about what the exchange rates and increased shipping costs (from wherever to them) have jumped. Kudos to B&H for not gouging us. As fuel has jumped in price, look for related price increases also on everything you buy as those costs will be passed on.

Not really. It's about volume/distribution more than anything.

Sony, Nikon Narrow Gap to Canon With New Digital Camera Models - Bloomberg

It's retail that's dying. Sales of electronics are driven by the Internet now.

The lens may be assembled in Vietnam, but I believe the optics are still manufactured in Japan.
All I know is that my FA43 specifically states that it was made in Japan. I will take them at their word.
